the entitlement fans feel to the work of authors they purport to love rises to the level of sickness, in my opinion. sanderson is beloved because he vomits out words like a busted standpipe, hardly ever holding up Consumption

It’s fine if he doesn’t care to finish it, but he should say so, if that’s the case. Put the issue to bed.
If there was an author skilled in the same ways GRRM is we could theoretically hand off the series to, I don’t want that person writing the end of his series! I want them writing the incredible story THEY want to write. The perfect person for the job should never be asked to do it.
I think grrm should simply stop worrying about those books and have one rambling drunk 6 hour live stream of asoiaf thoughts and call it a day. Everyone move on.
you aren't owed an end to your favorite story. you don't own it. you have no claim on it. go write fanfiction.
this behavior is antisocial, consumerist, and should be publicly shamed
It's the same people who use terms like 'IP' and 'content' unironically. The type of brain that thinks everything is a franchise that exists outside of the author's vision and can be taken over by anyone else. It is anti-art and infuriating. Read another book, there's tons of them.
Wow so many of you are intimately aware of George R. R. Martin's inner life and thoughts. Thank you for sharing all this valuable insight.
I love Sanderson. He’s not the right guy for this. Nobody should finish the series. George wrote himself into a corner as evidenced by how the show ended.
You make liking you easy
I’m not even a big Martin fan and like…yeah I’m sure it’s annoying but also this isn’t McDonald’s. What the fuck.
The type of person who demands with entitlement that GRRM finish the books is also the type of person who is going to hate the ending no matter what it is.
Thank you. I'm glad more people are disgusted by this behaviour. It was never okay.
I would like to think that Martin would pick an actually good writer to finish it off if he wanted but if he doesn't want it finished it is his call alone. It's funny because people did this stuff to Arthur Conan Doyle a century ago.
An unfinished story can be so beautiful! You can turn it around in your mind for the rest of your life. "But what happens?" Nothing happens! It's fiction!
I literally got my start it writing doing exactly that.
And if Martin just didn't write any more novels in the series that *would* be the end. An ending is just where a story stops. Sometimes that's an artistic choice and sometimes it's because of death or disinterest or writers' block but it's something a reader should work to be more comfortable with.
That might sound pedantic, but the history of literature is full of great stories that are worth reading and just kind of *stop* for one reason or another. Dead Souls, The Castle, The Tale of Genji.
Also, there is nothing stopping any fan from making up their own ideal ending in their head and entertaining themselves with it! Or, yes, writing it as fanfic! Hell, come up with how you would end your ideal fantasy epic and start your own!
This also applies to unfinished fanfic.
I think most of the loud ASOIAF fans don't actually want an ending. They just want a solution sheet for the plot so they can check whether they got a good grade in theorizing.
There’s nothing GRRM could do with the end of that thing that wouldn’t make some majority of people who want it mad. I wouldn’t want to touch it either. What’s he care anyway.
I like the work he did for Elden Ring, he should work with Fromsoft again and let these losers mald
Yes. Fuck Westeros, give me more Gloam-Eyed Queen lore that raises more questions than it answers.
ghoulish isn't it. i want George to finish the series, but only for himself. i think you can always tell the difference between people who do create and people who don't when future ASOIAF books come up. people who create seem to better understand that sometimes big projects can't be tied up.
people who make stuff will know how much it's (probably) hurting him that he's not yet been able to nurture his baby exactly how he originally wanted. people who don't make stuff just want more content and don't understand why they can't just be given the bullet points of the plot immediately.
it's like, do you want future ASOIAF books because you love George's writing and want to swim in his world, or do you want future ASOIAF books so you can immediately skip to the end of Winds on release day and find out if the Others broke through the Wall with a horn.
asking sanderson to finish asoiaf is like asking jj abrams to direct david lynch's unproduced screenplays
Every time I’m reminded of JJ Abram’s
Sanderson taking care of finishing A Song of Ice and Fire is one of my worst nightmares. In the fourth and fifth books of the series, Martin become a bit too self-indulgent, and he could have used a strict editor, but he's still a brilliant writer. Sanderson's books are simply dull.
I think he should finish it if he wants but he's done plenty. Let him just watch football all day if he feels like it.
If I was George R R Martin I would never release another book out of pure spite cuz of these freaks
this is why i want to be more like harlan ellison. I don't know anything about him besides he wrote one of my favorite episodes of star trek. never read his work. but his disdain for the fans is really something that I want to emulate. just pure vitriol.
@8via.bsky.social once told me that he was "a publisher's sick wet dream of a writer" and that description has stuck with me for years
Sanderson? SANDERSON??
It's George or nobody else because 1) it's his story, and 2) his prose has only grown more beautiful with each book and I cannot wait to see what he's been working on for 15 years
I hope he has in place something like Pratchett did in his will and has his hard drive (or whatever his unfinished/unpublished writing is in) publicly destroyed in some humorous manner
Cool and good when some fandom-cordycepped carcass swims up through the ocean of incredible genre art that we’re drowning in, and uses their first breath of air to politely agree with some of the rudest behavior on earth. Fandom should be diagnosed formally by doctors at this point.
I’m read but not well-read. My perception is that ASOIF, if completed, would be among the most complex works ever written, if not the most. To say nothing of its actual quality. Is that accurate or do I need to read more widely?
I certainly wouldn't mind if Martin set up for any notes that he has to be released should he pass but I certainly don't feel like it's owed to me.
On the other hand I'd dig it if he had a bit ready to publish on him passing, basically, "yo I finished the series and it was way better than the ending of that show but you all wouldn't stop bothering me so it has all been burned and you'll never see it"
Sanderson finished WoT tho… love him only for that!
Dreadful writer
To each their own! I greatly enjoy most of his work
a couple of years ago on another site you posted something like, I feel george is going to publish it soon and I was like i bet gretchen knows him personal I better start rereading the series
not an asoiaf person (nothing against, just never got into it) but honestly losing my shit over the concept that its a cool idea to let someone who has a "vice president of narrative" for his books do anything else with someone elses artistic work
I have a great universal ending to the majority of all books, that you can use if you're disappointed with how it ended. "And then they all died. The end."
I mean, Sanderson is *also* beloved because the words he vomits out are good.
They aren't, but there's nothing wrong with eating a bag of chips
The whole “let someone else finish it” doesn’t work anyway because people specifically want George’s voice & vision, if they’d be satisfied with anything else they’d be content with fan fiction. These assholes can wait & hopefully they get flat ties on their way to pick Winds up if he releases it
At this point I think actively punishing fans for their demands needs to occur. Let someone who is completely unfamiliar/antagonistic to the original work come in and ruin it for everyone. What I mean to say is: I'm available for work.
The Slop Must Flow
Producing a single decent work of fiction is already a freaking miracle. I wish that he had been able to finish asoiaf but the inspiration left. That's life. Besides, crowd already saw an ending and hated it.
They just straight up couldn't've done several aspects of George's planned endings, imo: for example, I believe Arya will permanently lose her face to the House of Black and White, and they weren't gonna fire Maisie Williams for the last 3 seasons
I never watched the show. Still gotta be disheartening to see a story you're involved in get so disparaged even if the ending was bad.
While I liked Sanderson ending the wheel of time, in retrospect, I'd have been fine if it ended. Same with Berserk. I think it has more to do with the author's intent-do they want someone to cross the finish line. The waiting for martin to die so someone else can do it is grotesque
I'm much more ok with Sanderson ending WoT because it was the will of the author and arranged in advance. Like, if Carrie Fisher had said, if I die use whatever computer magic you need to put me in them movies, I would be less critical of that move.
yea, same with berserk, i believe. just saying the older i get the more ok i am with unfinished works.
The thing that really pisses me of about these posthumous rewrites is the idea that I need the work of an author I’m very familiar with filtered through some other authors (boring) voice, just give us the raw material or burn it
Not to mention the glee at which people fantasise about his death to his face
Stephen King's Misery, but instead of a snowed-in Maine house, it's on stage in front of hundreds of people.
Fan culture delenda est.
I’m still screaming at the corpse of Frank Herbert to finish Dune.
I want to read the winds of winter as much as the next fan, but it would genuinely be hilarious if he just decided to never let the ending be released. Or just declared the last season of the show the official ending
Sanderson is the wrong choice 100%. I wouldn't read it. The more I know a out him, the less likely I ever read Wheel of Time
What are these people avoiding in their life with the constant want to consume?
TRULY
Work? I have piles of movies and books I mean to get through, or at least try to get through, but making a living does slow my pace.
I maintain that George should just say that from now on the book will take a year longer for every imbecile fan that demands to know how soon it's coming.
Honestly modern fandom is a curse on art. (Not all fandom practices, but the whole consummerist perspective on being a "fan" that demands ever more content and refuses to allow art to stand on its own)
Yup! Capitalism murders prosocial joyful relationships replacing them with miserable cruel transactions they call markets It’s sad and terrifying how capitalism also abuses & neglects us from birth teaching people to only consume, transact, & engage in escapism
People generally don't consider the commodification of art and entertainment as disgusting as they should.
we are like 2 weeks from someone AI slopping this
Someone did it years ago and go sued by Martins publisher screenrant.com/game-thrones...
arguably insufficient punishment
I cant imagine being an Author and having that done to my works, just..... gross and insulting
why would sanderson finish game of thrones? he doesnt even know what sex is
I think George wants to go back to writing sci fi but can't figure out how to do it without being murdered by his fans
I genuinely think that if GRRM doesn't want to finish ASOIF or doesn't feel like he can deliver something good enough, he should just... stop. Tell everyone that he's done with it and if they want to know how it ends watch the show. Then reboot Wildcards or something.
I think that's where a lot of the frustration comes from; authors like GRRM and Rothfuss swearing up and down that they are working on the last book, and it's coming out any time.
I wonder how much of that, the swearing that they *are* working on it, comes from pressure put on them by the publisher, for PR. I doubt Penguin Random House wants it said that this big cash cow series is never getting a conclusion.
GoT is a multi million dollar industry. A lot of jobs and livelihoods depend on interest in his world, I’m sure that’s factored in too when he decides to share how much interest he has in finishing the main GoT story versus pursuing other GoT threads and different IPs
Have you seen these people? If he says he's not finishing the series, they'll burn his house down. I agree with you in theory, but between the publishers and the fans, I legitimately don't think he can safely do that.
If he just said 'it would be exactly like season 8 but I cbf' everyone's nose would wrinkle and they'd have forgotten about it by xmas.
My theory is he's not working on ASOIF and hasn't been for years for the same reason he stopped Wildcards: he over-developed the second act of the story arc and writing it became a chore rather than a labor of love. I think he's claiming to still be working on it to shut people up.
Whether GRRM does or does not finish GoT doesn't matter to me. If he releases the next one I'll reread the whole series but if not then I can appreciate it for what it was when I read it the first time. I don't know why "fans" continue to harass him about it, there are other books to read move on.
A series I really love that may not get finished due to the author's passing is A Pattern of Shadow & Light. Even if it is never finished it is still tied as my favorite fantasy series with WoT (which I think Sanderson did a good job finishing). A series doesn't have to be complete to be good.
I dislike Sanderson's work, but that's honestly just a difference of taste (I think other people are perfectly valid for loving it). But it's disgusting to try and pressure someone to give their work over to someone else just because they don't work fast enough for you.
And as someone who's read and enjoyed both... I wouldn't want him taking on the gig. One because it's a tonal mismatch. But most importantly it's not my or anyone's call. And the last time I recall us trying to shame an author into finishing his epic, we got Steven King's Dark Tower. It was bad.
Gotta be one of the funniest ledes of all time. "Yes, we're only talking about this because someone acted like an insane asshole. But...what if he was right?"
At this point if I were GRRM I would do something else out of spite. "A song of ice and fire fans LIVID as George R.R. Martin gets 'really into' Pickleball"
I'm gonna invite him to my knitting group
I've been saying that some of these people never watched Carnivale and it shows.
if Sando got anywhere near song of ice and fire he would churn out Terminator 3-tier dogshit that would bury the series
Honestly, the vibe I've gotten is that he's just stopped enjoying the series - and if that's the case, I hope he never puts pen to paper for that series again, and it's left unfinished forever.
