Well now I have a new idea
Hell yes, Dental Fraud Enthusiast strikes again! Though, “listen: lop off an inch from the top and make the hinge side 5 degrees off of plumb” is extremely 50s-60s of your house. MCM is the “fuck it, we’ll do it live” era of construction.
The amount of baseboards in this house that are just unsanded 1x4s 😖
"Who looks at baseboards?" -- Some finish carpenter in 1962
I had one room in the house i grew up in that had 6 distinctly different doors. Size and design.
oh nooooo, that's so annoying, i'm sorry. we had to deal with that at junior league HQ and it was a THING.
After installing 10 sets of identical shades in my house, I got to the window in my office and discovered that it was 4 inches wider than the others. I only realized this after drilling holes and hanging the shade, which left 2" on each side. Why?
I have an entirely different vision of "dimension" here.
What the absolute actual f
@mbunchanumbers.bsky.social described this house’s construction as “vibes-based” one time and it’s about the truest thing I have ever heard
The single fucky door is the bane of my existence. I generally like living in an older neighbourhood, but holy fuck do I question that every time I have to fix/reno something
I read that as “… in a different dimension…” and thought “yes, please. And where might this door be?”
Would be a vast improvement at the moment
I’m constantly searching for that door. You’ll let me know if it comes up?
Obvs
Ahhhh!!! I had this happen to me in San Francisco! Turns out the door was 2 in shorter and about 1 in wider than standard doors. When I got the custom replacement made the guy at Home Depot told me those were “hong Kong measurements” so the previous contractor was probably from there
the truest tweet I ever read was “no person on earth is a greater scoundrel and fucker than the person who owned your home before you. thanks for saving $18 buying the heater with no identifiable model number that takes Dumbass sized filters you honorless fuck”
Poetry
Also wth, I know I was following you before, why am I not now
spent a good chunk of my evening dealing with a neighbor who owns a house in the historic district and discovered the six vinyl replacement windows in it were installed fraudulently by a previous owner w/the permit claiming they were wood & now the ARC isn't letting her keep them
I would give a great deal to read these emails
That’s a dirtbag move by the ARC. “Doing nothing meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards,” is a thing one could say. I mean, conceivably your local ordinances are more strict, but I think your neighbor could tell them to sit and spin, especially if they have that documentation.
TBH she's the victim of fraud and I said she should talk to a lawyer and recover the costs of replacing all her windows from the title insurance company, previous owner, previous owner's real estate agent, and so on, bc they all are liable. otherwise what are all those closing costs for?
Ugh, we had to do something like this at great cost a few years ago. Shortly afterwards S.F. (in part due to reporting by @sfchronicle.com) fixed the rule.
Hell is living in a Historic District (obvs not like /gestures vaguely, but it is its own kind of hell). Think you have property rights? Think again!
