I love this show but you're right. If this was a traditional 24 episode season I wouldn't mind, but since all series are effectively limited series now (with long gaps between seasons) every episode is essential.

They’re burning like half this season on gag episodes, it seems. We’ve still got the Four And A Half Vulcans comedy episode coming too. There’s no clear build towards a finale story thread or character developments, and we’re one episode away from being half done with this season.

My husband, who watches with me but is not a Trekkie, said it feels like they’re noodling and taking liberties they haven’t yet earned, making the whole exercise just feel decadent instead of clever.

Agreed. They have Carte Blanche to do whatever without having really earned the privilege for it. SNW is a good show sometimes and a “I feel I can skip it” show other times.

I liked the crossover episode, which didn’t feel like a gag, and the musical one was a fun gag but that can’t be the whole show.

I have no taste for musicals, so, that was a skip for me altogether.

Yes! If I have to wait 2+ years between seasons, then make it worth my while and don’t make a bunch of throwaway zany holodeck filler.
