I thought WWIII = The Eugenics Wars, but they've never spelled it out under the hand waving of "All documents lost" during the conflict. One key aspect of ST's tech utopia is that Earth doesn't get there without the total destruction of existing governments & and a compete do over.

I'm from *California* and was taught that the South had better generals and troops but lost the war due to the North's economic advantage (also why so many things were named after Confederate officers, including many federal Army posts). Modern American law enforcement training emphasizes Spirit of the Law vs Letter of the Law with the idea of police discretion to *lessen* the heavy hand of the state when interacting with the public (ie let them off with a warning). This has been inverted with LE making arrests on vibes.

TheJonesest (@thejonesest.bsky.social) reply parent
Ha. Sorry. Merit raises? My experience has been that the only way faculty get any kind of pay increase is if its specifically included in collective bargaining (those state COLs happen every so often, it was 6 years for us not that long ago. Merit increases seem to be a myth in may orgs).
TheJonesest (@thejonesest.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean, at least faculty get annual COL increases built into their contract. Staff and Administration get...whatever the state feels like letting us have if/when they get around to it someday. Also senior admin/exec positions come exclusively from tenured faculty so...yeah...you're fine.
TheJonesest (@thejonesest.bsky.social) reply parent
Keep in mind that in red states these conditions are literally written into state law. These are non-union, right to work states where the punishment is termination, not a harshly worded letter. It's easier to be brave in CA and NYC where your job isn't in danger.

Its more after school activities that are increasingly required for entrance into college; kids are working on HS classes in middle school, college classes in HS, plus sports (practice until 9pm) & music/arts/etc. It's an arms race. Most kids get driven by parents (which is another issue)
TheJonesest (@thejonesest.bsky.social) reply parent
A few things: they share the same busses and drivers as elementary and middle schools, so they have to stagger schedules. HS kids have more after school activities/sports so they need those to start earlier so kids arent up until late at night. Etc.
