I wonder if it's because US TV/movies pretty much ignore it and that filters through (or did from the mid 70s on)? Can't remember the quote, but something about Americans seeing 'temporarily embarrassed millionaires' rather than not having money.

Looked it up, and apparently Steinbeck except it wasn't actually him, wasn't what he said and isn't what it meant in context, thus making it the perfect modern quote.
