A different meaning to thermostatic politics: Ohio Republican Rep. Roy Klopfenstein (R., Haviland) wants to allow utilities in Ohio to remotely set Ohioans' thermostats in their houses.

It’s voluntary. Also, it exists in other places without problems. Legislation is needed to allow it.
Absolutely the fuck not.
"Honey, our Nest™ got cuckoo-ed."
Big government eh?
From the party of “they’re banning gas stoves.” Interesting…
Ohio where intelligence has gone to die
Would this apply to rich people, too, or just the rest of us?
Sooooo much freedom!
🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
Eat shit Ohio Republicans I would go without heat if you try to control anything in my house. Fuck them!
People should so some research before automatically reacting. Voluntary demand response programs are an important tool to manage peak energy use and can reduce the need for new power plants.
Huge power saver and great way to avoid targeted brown outs
Sure, voluntary, but not automatically done by the utility with no choice
It's the hypocrisy more than anything.
but low-flow shower heads and toilets are an affront to our FREEDOMS!
The smallest of government
So called Libertarians have been deafly quit since January…total cowards.
Obviously, the point is valid here. Legislators should also introduce legislation to curtail large businesses and throttle AI consumption if they want to control energy prices.
🎯 This feels like recycling all over again: blame consumers, not greedy corporations who are incentivized to destroy the environment w/o consequences. fwiw, "libs" are already recycling like crazy & our thermostats are set to the most environmentally sustainable levels.
I don’t have a problem with consumers opting in to programs that throttle their AC during peak usage. I definitely have a problem with the narrative that residential energy use is the main issue or that the onus is on homeowners to scale back consumption. www.msn.com/en-us/news/t...
Republican Socialism!
I'm old enough to remember this being a conservative talking point *against* smart meters.
It is like Biden's infrastructure boost. Republicans vote against it, then take credit for it. But reversed. Republican's initiate the stupid plan, but will blame it on Demon-crats.
I would replace my wifi thermostat with a dump thermostat.
Um, my utility company already does. I have a smart thermostat that shifts the temp at peak usage times and I can’t figure out how to shut off the “feature”. I’ll be working in my office and realized that I’m sweating, check the temp and it’s been reset to 78 from where I set it at 74.
That would be expensive to implement. A smart thermostat for every zone plus professional installation?
Our program with Ameren in Missouri has been in place for years. They sent us a free Nest thermostat & we installed it ourselves.
That's one thermostat for one zone where you had the C wire. Some homes have a zone for every room, a combination of heat pumps and boilers, and no C wires at existing thermostats. Enabling smart controls everywhere can get expensive real quick.
Dammit! Communist Obama-Biden Dems are at it again!#@!! (Oh ...... wait)
The rich will be allowed to ‘opt out’ I’m sure.
Sounds like people would have to sign up for the Big Brother program with financial incentives. Bet a nickel that residents’ thermostats would be adjusted first (especially poor neighborhoods), so that big data centers etc. for bitcoin, AI etc. run by the wealthy tech bros would get power priority.
They already are causing water shortages in west Texas. Absolutely what’s happening.
Big Brother knows best! 🙃
Talk about government control. Why does Ohio keep re-electing Jim Jordan. What do they expect?
Sure, bring government further into our homes. They all lie about everything.
* Government's robots. What could possibly go wrong?
Big Brother in Ohio.
But wait - aren’t republicans always screaming about government overreach? Or is that just bullsh**? 🥴🥴
While the administration cuts energy tax credits, the Energy Star program, and renewable energy projects?
So much for limited govt.
I had signed up for one of these in a previous home. The final time they did it, it was 98 that day (this is NC) and they turned off our AC as we were cooking dinner - about 5:30. The house got to 87 before they turned it back on.
As one of my friends who is prone to colorful expressions would say, this would go over about as well as a fart in church.
The party of small government, ladies and gentlemen!
We had this in CA when I lived there, except you had to opt in & it was controlled by power company, not the state. Used if we had heat alert & they avoided rolling blackouts
Damn. How’s that for senseless big government overreach ?
We’ve had this for years with Ameren in Missouri. It’s part of their demand response program (both residential and commercial) & is a great way to reduce peak energy loads. It’s totally voluntary. You can opt in or opt out at any time.
so much freedom....
So no more utility bills then?
🔖
And Amazon will start seeing by-pass devices!
The party of “small government?”
This is INSANE
Fuck that
OMG!
Klopfenstein though not taking steps to limit the huge use of power by data centers, eh?
FFS, seriously?!
All the more reason not to have one of those "bugged devices" in your home.
Not a fan of Siri or Alexa, but smart thermostats are great. You don’t have to connect them to anything else.
Same here. I've had remote control thermostats for over a decade, and signed up for National Grid to override them and balance the load on hot afternoons. Opt-in and a $40 incentive are fine with me.
Why? So giant data centers an have all the electricity they want?
Little government and no deep state.
Southern California Edison already has this program. We signed up, got a small credit, and roasted every summer until I cancelled it. They claimed the temp would changed for only 10 minutes, which was false. Now I have solar with two batteries, so I make my own power. Screw the power company.
I’m in SoCall too. I refused to opt in and whenever my Nest auto adjusts my settings I go into the app and put my schedule back.
Good for you!
We already have this in areas in Nebraska but it is voluntary and you actually get a small credit.
Absolutely not!
😱
Wow, the Republican agenda has dramatically changed from the one I remember! Centralized government control sounds like a different economic base than " less government "? Am I missing something?
If a Dem proposed this, we would be hearing about how all these communists are trying to control your consumption habits. But since Republicans have been captured by big tech and the crypto industry, they now want all energy flowing to data centers, instead of the public. That's corporate capture.
Wow, this is invasive.
Controlling every woman’s body is not enough? Gotta now interfere with their temperature?
“Daddy’s home! And who set the thermostat so high?!?”
Small government...
You need a smart thermostat for your local utility to control your home temperature settings. I’m keeping my ancient circa 1974 analog thermostat
Uh, no.
Yes, because Ohio utilities have earned so much of our trust. If their quarterly profits were down they would literally turn up the heat.
A far better idea would be to allow we the people to control the workplace thermostats of all politicians
So they can fire up more AI centers??
The party that believes in small government at work.
I believe our utility in RI already has this voluntary option. You agree to allow them to tweak your thermostat remotely, so that for example on hot days when usage is very high, and you left home with your AC set at 70, they can go in and bump it up to 75 to reduce the load on the grid.
The fact they know you’re not at home suggests the utility company is tracking more than just your thermostat setting.
The poster didn't say that.
