This is actually what the Second Amendment is for. If the federal government were ever to be captured by tyrants and autocrats (as it has now,) a "well regulated Militia" would be the final check that a free people could impose on a despot.

That, or the fact that there was no standing army and thousands of miles of unregulated frontier. The founders did not put a ‘feel free to attack us’ clause in the constitution. The 2nd amendment was not meant to keep our government in check through the constant threat of civilian violence.
The irony is not lost on me that the very things that the biggest 2A defenders have claimed as justification for being well armed are happening but they don't care because it's their guy being the tyrant and he's picking on people they don't like.
yeah California and Texas have military units that aren't part of the national guard but not many states do
Not really It was to respond to local insurgencies (primarily attacks by native groups and revolting enslaved people) without having to send to the distant federal government, when the standing Army was less than a thousand soldiers and travel times were in months.
State militias fighting each other will just give him the excuse he's looking for to go full martial law

"No, not like *that* ... like, only against black people." - Gun Cucks, probably
"Well regulated;" the key phrase. Your friend wanting an armed show of force was calculated in the realistic motion picture "Civil War." Felon 47, his rabid white supremacists and billionaire racists are hoping to declare martial law, and suspend the Constitution as long as Felon 47 feels like it.
