I remember how incredibly funny it was when he almost died of COVID and I think America has been through a lot recently and could use some good humor to brighten our spirits.
This kind of reminds me of a comment on /r/fullcommunism which stated that centralised production of boots merely required (1) a census of how many people needed boots, (2) production of that quantity of boots, and (3) distribution thereof. Easy!

If you went anywhere else on planet Earth and told them that society should spend considerable resources ensuring that the only way to access a beach is via a private automobile, they would rightfully put you in a straightjacket.
The beach was only about 40% full on Labor Day because the carrying capacity of the beach is giant mansions, tiny dilapidated duplexes and street parking. And I don't think there's anywhere in America that's as racially segregated as Los Angeles County within 5 miles of the ocean.
It's absolutely not worth the effort, but I think someone ought to copy a "scientific" racism paper and focus it on Southern and Appalachian Whites instead of Black people because you would find the exact same results.

I would probably rather live in NYC than Dallas but I'm under no illusions that NYC has a superior "culture" to Dallas or that New Yorkers are more sophisticated or whatever. Everywhere is basically the same now so you're mostly choosing based on jobs, climate and built environment.
If people aren't moving in, your city has no culture beyond a bunch of sclerotic dorks who managed to snag a rent controlled apartment and are gatekeeping about stuff that was already around when they got there. It's a cargo cult for top 10%ers trying to buy a personality through their zip code.
I dunno. SF bands were already decamping for LA in the late 2000s. Even back then, SF was super difficult if you didn't have a rent controlled place already so no one was moving in and things were fizzling out.

LIRR has terrible land use near the stations (huge parking lots and such) but generally has enough density to make it viable to run ~30 min headways all day. Compare these intermediate LIRR stations to the Metrolink stations with the *highest* daily boardings.
Sorry, forgot to respond. The reason commuter rail works in those places is because of density along the line. EG, the SB Line is the busiest Metrolink line with ~7k weekday boardings and 22 wd trips. The MARC Penn Line does 19.3k boardings & 58 trips. Here's pop density at the terminus of each.

This is probably right, but it's going to cost a lot more to hire people with these credentials and training.
I.e. the typical American metro is composed of an anchor large city with all the jobs, an inner ring of Segregation-Villes and then an exurban ring of Chud Creek's. Society is worse off because the latter two categories must govern and fund their own PDs.
I'm not exactly sure, but I think that the reforms we want (more/better investigative resources to bring down clearance rates, better physical standards so cops don't panic and shoot people, etc.) will end up costing more in the end so we should also be thinking about consolidating agencies.
We liberals need to come up with a positive vision of what law enforcement should look like because right now, that job is outsourced to outright fascists and anarchist bed-wetters.

I was so bummed when I moved to San Diego in 2013 expecting there to be a bunch of yet unknown Drive Like Jehu's, Antioch Arrow's and No Knife's. But I quickly discovered that the rent had gotten too high and it was just Sublime cover bands at that point.
It must've been so amazing to be into guitar music and have lived in DC or San Diego in the 90s. Two relatively small cities that were just crushing it with the music they produced.
Good thing we built a nation where driving a car is mandatory in 99% of urban environments!

W/o density each stop's daily boardings are limited to the number of parking spaces it can fot. No ridership means no revenue and no increase in frequency. So when Metrolink being stuck around warehouses with parking moats is a big reason why it sucks so much compared to other commuter rail systems.
We need more family sized apartments/condos. Single stair can make this work!

I'm also not talking about genuinely rural areas which are quite nice. I'm talking about areas with all the downsides of urban life with absolutely none of the benefits because everything is engineered to be a 3 mile trip in a car by yourself.
Bad news is you pay six figures for anything--attached or not. But there are plenty of ways to make small lot detached SFH homes work within a walkable environment. In fact, most of America used to be like this!
I understand that America has made normal cities illegal and only the top 10% of earners can afford to live in a pre-WWII legacy built environment. So I understand people having to settle because they can't afford it. But I cannot understand someone being enthusiastic about moving to such a place.
Whenever I'm forced to spend time in suburban sprawl, I simply cannot believe that there are actually people who enjoy living like that. Like somebody wakes up in the morning psyched to navigate his car down an 8 lane road to the same 15 chain stores on repeat surrounded by a barren sea of asphalt.
I just ate some tacos while looking at a parking lot like a maniac for 20 minutes, then got a coffee and stared at the mountains for another 20. My eyes were so happy not to be staring at a screen.
Had to get my phone repaired and the hour I was without it felt like when I quit smoking cigarettes. Probably not a great thing.

The city of Los Angeles has a uniquely cursed political culture. All its civic infrastructure until the 1990s served the Republican Party and when Democrats took over, they tried to rebuild out of 1970s activist movements. It's also a relatively poor large city with extremely transient industries.
The legislature is your tryout for LA City Council or Board of Supervisors!
I at once think city councils should have dramatically more members and far fewer powers. City councilmembers should basically be solely in the business of constituent services and city governments shouldn't have powers above naming streets.

I don't think it's going to happen, but there are a few dozen members of Congress who are correctly reasoning that Trump will smother their political career if the midterms are about him. There are at least conversations rn about how to get rid of him without being murdered by one of his supporters.
Trump literally doesn't care about what you say so long as you are not maligning him nor intimating you want his throne. You could get up and scream every racial slur while insisting the moon is made of cheese and Trump would be like "He's a very passionate guy!"

I'm sincerely curious what a Democratic Laura Loomer would be though. There's not a class of people that Democrats hate which sucks a lot of wind out of our sails. Do you do Meidas Touch conspiracy peddling? Do you go out to the exurbs and make fun of their culture? What am I tuning in to see?
A big part of this is that China went Communist four years after the end of WWII and they were previously the largest military force on the continent following Japan's obliteration. Letting Japan go Confederate was viewed as a small price to pay hold the line in East Asia.
