You have to buy an Apple approved lightning connector . Many are not, so look for one that says so in the description. Happened to me too and I have several useless ones that don’t work.

what's very strange is that the connector DOES work when I use it to connect my old charger. It's only fickle when I'm trying to use the headphones. Was it that way with yours too?

Data may be more fickle than carrying a charge. The ones that didn’t work are noticeably thinner than the ones that did work.

ahhh... I looked up the listing for the adaptors I got and there it is right there in the name: "Not for audio." At the time i bought it I was only looking to use it to charge my newer iPad, so that warning didn't register with me. www.amazon.com/Lightning-Ad...

I do not know about that, they just didn’t carry music through my headphones. I bought a couple that had “Apple compliant” or something and they worked fine.
