I still can clearly remember, how much I was crumbling under the critique I received back then on animexx. :,) And later as a comic artist in the Comics in Leipzig forum. Adding to the feeling of being just a miserable, talentless artist, despite working so hard, I felt REALLY bad about
feeling bad about being critiqued. ... if that makes sense? Like, sometimes I got that knot in my stomach that clearly said: "that person is NOT well-meaning. they don't want to actually help you. They want to drag you down." But as the tiny, unexperienced, naive person I was back then I fought
back that - very valid XD - feeling and said to myself: "NO. You're being unprofessional. As an artist you HAVE tO accept any critique! It's a BLESSING. And you feeling bad is a sign that you're just full of yourself and can't deal with negative feedback." When... in reality... you don't have to
take EVERYTHING seriously. XD ESPECIALLY when they jump on you for drawing stuff thats not up to your established "standard". I still remember posting something more sketchy/rough on animexx after only uploading polished artworks for some time. And I was actually proud of myself that I was able to
let loose and ... also post it? XD Like: Not everything has to be perfect, right? Oh boy, the comments under that piece were RELENTLESS 😭 I still fear, that experiences like these contributed to be being anxious and hyper-perfectionistic, which doesn't do my art any good. The moral of the story?
Sometimes critique is helpful, elevating, motivating. And sometimes it's malicious shit written by unhappy people who want to drag you down. Learn to differentiate between these two to avoid mental damage that hinders your art-journey later in life. You not only need the openness to receive good
feedback. You also need a healthy ego, that protects you from malicious forces! 😅❤️
Was ich mit "malicious" meine, is halt echt MALICIOUS!
(also überzogen geschrieben XD
