rich people love to threaten that they're going to leave the city if you raise their taxes and then not leave the city
Country, too
i live 20 miles from the Indiana border in IL, and the sheer number of local suburban/exurban dipshits i've heard in my life threatening to leave IL because of taxes is astonishing. it's a 20 mile drive and they won't do it lol.
This is what I hate about politics and society in general: The world operates on money, so Republican politics already have an advantage. Like, you could attack the poor without too much resistance, but you can't really attack the rich in the say way, or businesses for that matter.
For example: I theorize this is why imposing regulations & restrictions on businesses & wealthy people are so hard, yet why the poor forever deal with red tape & hoops to jump through. They aren't seen as "necessary" for a strong economy, while wealthy business owners are. They have less leverage.
If you did away with wealthy or business owners, it could damage your states', cities' economics. However, if you boot at the low-income, poor people from your state, it wouldn't have as much of a detrimental impact, which is why Red states, cities do this through systematic changes.
And what real way is there to combat this style of politics? IF Democrats did the same as Republicans, attacked businesses and the wealthy with regulations and hoops, then they would probably lose political ground, which is why they don't. So they have no real recourse like Republicans.

they cry all summer in house #2 or house #3
Happens in London and the UK all the time. Empty threats!
most of them probably don’t “live” in NYC for tax purposes already!
Just get out already. Then we can have small business and choice again. It’s a good thing for them to go. Demand will create small markets.
And even if they do leave, they can’t take their property with them. Taxing the billionaires is the only way to save the economy
Where would they go? Cleveland? Let's be serious here.
Personally, I would pay to watch the entire New York billionaire set relocate to Florida. I think that would be hilarious to watch.
Every fixed income retiree whines this in every city and town and never does shit
All talk!
Simply posturing. They love when taxes are raised bc then poors can't afford to live there.
85% of this comes from people in New York or LA and they could never survive being away from those two places for more than two weeks
these same sort of people threatened to leave and then did not leave the eminently leaveable state of massachusetts, it’s absurd
all the folks who left SF for Miami during covid went right back lol
The people that would actually leave can’t afford to, so they don’t bother saying it
Honestly, it sounds like a win either way.
Yeah I've never really understood the threat
I absolutely believe a capital revolt is possible, but the threats of a capital revolt seem to completely outsize the estimated impact of the policies being floated. I can just imagine "we'll deprive the city of money spending 1 weekend a month in the Poconos" like "no Amazon this Wednesday" stuff.
Exactly. Raise the taxes, when they leave? Everyone’s property taxes go down bc the high end of that bell curve left
These people learn what living in a low tax state is actually like and realize it sucks
Let them leave
That's where the money is
Mass recently passed a ‘millionaire tax’ on any income over $1M. Opponents screamed it would only drive wealthy and high earning citizens from the state. In fact since going into effect the number of people paying that surtax has increased.
The dastardly government’s scheme is to make more constituents wealthy so they can collect more taxes
Life in the 80's on The Penis Envy Peninsula (where Tiger Woods crashed not taking the gravel escape lane for trucks to his right as a hint he should've slowed down)
Fine. If they contribute nothing what do we have to lose?
Rich people are under the illusion that they create wealth
