... I don't get the national political media's obsession with ONE local mayoral race that is neither a bellwether for national politics nor a springboard for a presidential election. It's unhealthy, y'all. Either report on more cities' races too, or let it go.

I hold them to a higher standard than politic or Axios. My subscription lapsed but if subscribed on & off for years.

I filled out an automatic subscription postcard (!) years ago. I do find them maddening on occasion, but they have ethical standards unlike, say NYT or WaPo, so I stick with them.

Lollllll. Oh, I cosign following the TLs of politicals across the country, including his. I do myself. It's the volume of national media attention that I think is ridiculous. Like, why did it take so long for me to hear about the multiracial Dem trio doing a sit-in at the Missouri legislature?

The other three candidates are all Republican and/or MAGA friendly, and yet combined are getting half the vote...in New York City. Doesn't speak too well for the one that isn't.

I think it's really interesting witnessing how much democratic voters resent seeing a politician who's willing to fight for immigrants and renters. Y'all don't even try to hide your disdain for the people you share oxygen with.

"democratic voters" or "Democratic voters"? πŸ€” Anyways, you completely miss the point of a post in a rush to show disdain for the people you share oxygen with. 🫠

Is the point that you think that the fate New York City and the 3 million immigrants who live there are somehow irrelevant to you? Or is the point that you can't imagine how the major local politicians that get international news coverage could ever become major national politicians?

It fits perfectly into the anti Dem media push that has been a staple for years. Just look at the framing here. There are clicks to be harvested from all and every "Dems bad" story. From right, left, and center.

If the story centers on conflict, it'll get shared and discussed widely. Particularly if it plays on long-standing intra-party conflict. So this writer goes out, finds a few people who repeat a Dems vs left talking point we see all over social media, and the narrative is reinforced. Rinse. Repeat.

Wow, that's way more succinct! Thanks. I think about this a lot. Like, for all the writers, blogger, and media stars talking / debating / pushing the discourse, what's the result? I mean, when it comes to fighting fascism, I'd like to see our media stars actually *do something* that changes things.

When journalism became about the career of the journalist rather than a service to the public in order to help inform the electorate in order to have a functioning democracy? Death spiral.

And it's proving to be a wholesale rejection of the billionaire class. Though I'm also all-in on following the NYC race. This is definitely a case for AND news coverage rather than OR news coverage. Something's brewing at the local level all across the country.

I respect your perspective that it's "and" instead of "or." But my counterpoint... I don't think our current national political media is capable of a good quality "and." And too, they're not doing a particular good job of covering all NYC voters, particularly regular Black voters.

Fair point, the media is emaciated these days. Though the AP is still out there, reporting on all these city elections. It isn't too hard to glom onto their coverage.

Patronizing? I disagreed with your opinion because NYC matters a lot more than other cities when it is a massive center for culture, tourism, etc. The simple fact is that NYC being as big as it is, is what makes it so relevant, especially with so much pressure looming from the executive branch

Using the word "disingenuous" to describe my post, and then still trying it with another post, is certainly an attempt to be patronizing. I'll leave it to others to decide if you're successful.

The media declared his primary win a national political earthquake, but it has hardly moved the seismograph needle in New York City itself. So as usual the media is desperately trying to craft news rather than report it.
