I mean Israel literally bombed a US military ship in international waters, intentionally (according to every service member on the ship and the entirety of a Russian vessel that witnessed it). They paid a few million and didn't get in trouble (and that was OUR TAX MONEY that they paid us with).
Seems we have a lot of trouble learning the lesson that letting crimes go unpunished because it would be uncomfortable to enforce them, will always come back to hurt us. 🤷
I mean we do that because if we actually held those accountable for horrible war crimes, every president and most of our legislative branch and upper echelons of the military would all be at the Hague within the week. Those with the power to enforce it all are the ones doing the war crimes.
Perhaps if we held them accountable, there would be less crime? That's the general principle of the law and punishment.

June 8th, 1967. The USS Liberty. The ship was in international waters helping to monitor the Six Day War. Israeli fighter jets attacked it killing 34 people (one was a civilian) and wounding around 170 others. The US and Israeli governments both officially said it was an accident BUT
all accounts of those on the ship and witnesses it was absolutely intentional. All of the publicly available facts support that it was intentional too. Israel paid over 20 years or so the equivalent of around 85 million to the US (and their budget is heavily padded by our tax dollars).
And had ppl following crew and accusing them of being anti Semitic whenever they gave public talks
They were sworn to secrecy about many detail at the time to protect "National Security" A clear cover up of an alleged intentional hours-long attack
Iirc even one of the joint chiefs of staff publicly called out the president for covering it up.
IIRC they also attacked it for several hours with gunboats. And it had a big fuck off Stars & Stripes. No chance of a mistake.
I thought they just flew by and launched missiles at it but can't remember for sure. But it was definitely clearly marked as an American vessel, there was absolutely no mistaking it for anything else.
