what does the first part of the story have to do with the car accident? seems pretty non-sequitur and suspiciously 'look what a good samaritan he is!'— but not really relevant to the later highway accident?

like it'd be the type of thing you might include if you knew eventually it was gonna come out that he was totally sauced and got rear-ended at high speed because of being bad at driving due to the sauce. "stupid libs! DUI is actually FINE if you just saved a woman from domestic violence!"
