that old Frankenstein tweet went so viral that I nearly lost my entire mind arguing with a deluge of ding-dongs who insisted the monster is the villain, can't wait to do this all over again 7 years later

RIP Graham Greene. Every time he popped up on screen when I was a kid, my mom would excitedly point him out for being an actual Native on the screen. Able to be deadly serious and infinitely hilarious (even in smaller roles like Last of Us), he ate up the screen. Nʌki’wah brother.

thank you so much! you know, it really varies - Manhunter piece took about 6 days, Point Break essay was 4 days (fast for me). now that a lot of my writing is for patreon, I give myself a couple weeks, maybe a month for research-heavy pieces, but I'm usually working on other stuff at the same time

yes, totally! part of Mann's magic imho is that he make a lot of his work feel like a documentary, but it's still somehow very romantic and/or expressionistic. so much of The Insider feels incredibly subjective - like we're seeing everything through Wigand's eyes

Plus Blaise has something that Bond doesn’t: a theme song by Sparks! youtu.be/MNvAntvPPxI?...
priscilla page (@priscillapage.bsky.social) reply parent
it's weird because I love Roger Moore in general but when I was first getting into Bond movies, I felt like his Bond kinda grated. too cheeky for me. I gotta revisit them and give him another chance, but yeah.

Watched this again recently when Criterion had their Michael Mann package and it is definitely a quintessential "great movie that is more relevant than ever"
priscilla page (@priscillapage.bsky.social) reply parent
also, I'd be okay with a woman playing Bond, but I don't think it's the right call. misogyny and imperialism are baked into 007's DNA. and it feels so lazy to turn an iconic fictional dude into a lady - I feel like I'm getting the scraps! give me a Modesty Blaise franchise, or a brand new character.
priscilla page (@priscillapage.bsky.social) reply parent
I love GoldenEye and I like Tomorrow Never Dies, but I feel like maybe growing up with Remington Steele reruns made it hard for me to take Brosnan seriously as Bond (I love Brosnan in general). but yeah, I love both of Dalton's movies
priscilla page (@priscillapage.bsky.social) reply parent
ohh are you an Insider fan?? (I know we've talked about Thief...) guess I gotta up my game for this one
priscilla page (@priscillapage.bsky.social) reply parent
it's tragic that we didn't get a few more outings with him as 007. imho he feels like the Bond who most matches the character's energy in the books.
priscilla page (@priscillapage.bsky.social)
Sean Connery might be THE James Bond, but Daniel Craig's Bond is my personal favorite. Timothy Dalton wildly underrated - overall I prefer the butch Bonds to the more posh, quippier, prettier ones. and On Her Majesty's Secret Service is one of the best Bond movies ever made.
