I found an analogy that helped today. Teaching kids to use AI to "help" with thinking or research before they have learned to do it themselves, but warning them to check its work is like giving them a faulty calculator before they can add and subtract, but warning them to check its work

In my view, the question is: consensus among whom? If both authors of the seminal works on "competitive authoritarianism" put the US in that category today (and they do), that says more to me than a broader academic consensus would. Personally, I agree with them, but we'll see how things unfold.
