Depression feels like a drain, slowly sapping your energy until you curl up in a ball and hide from the world. And when that depression is caused by a genetic legacy of colonization, the locus of that drain is the society of the colonizing people. My father suffered from that weight his whole life.
I don’t concede that European privilege and white privilege are synonymous. Minorities with light skin are persecuted for their color because they threaten European hegemony in a way that darker people of color simply do not. Europeans cannot comfortably rest assured of their status. They resent it.
