Tech improves. In ten years time, LLM-based chat agents will (probably) be far more accurate. That won’t fix any of the underlying problems. It won’t bring back disappeared jobs. It won’t make being an artist any more of a viable job. But those things are about capitalism, not AI.
Russell Garner (@rgarner.bsky.social) reply parent
That performance is my favourite piece of music of all time. My first band we had this great guitarist and we covered SoS and every time he did the arpeggiated bit of the solo my entire body would get pins and needles
Russell Garner (@rgarner.bsky.social) reply parent
And I suppose the rise of AI boyfriend indicates there are people more than happy to be lied to. Robosexuals.
Russell Garner (@rgarner.bsky.social) reply parent
I suppose we've all learned to recognise people peddling easy sells over the voices of artists though. There have always been your cynicals. This is just Stock Aitken and Waterman with a prompt box, the barrier to entry removed, and compounding negative externalities.
Russell Garner (@rgarner.bsky.social) reply parent
And worse, an opportunity cost for an authentic voice.
Russell Garner (@rgarner.bsky.social) reply parent
As a result of this I finally went and listened to a Velvet Sundown track. If I'd have seen that performed live I'd have loved it. But knowing what we know now it's like bursting into tears at a friend lying about having a terminal disease. Utterly inauthentic. A duping.
Russell Garner (@rgarner.bsky.social) reply parent
(this is massively inaccurate and I didn't get it until the second article, you're right)
Russell Garner (@rgarner.bsky.social) reply parent
As long as somebody was trying to speak to you. If it's the average of the unpaid and it's to the benefit of capital... But seems like he was training on his own data, which is not the impression you get from the first article. "AI" is overloaded.
Russell Garner (@rgarner.bsky.social) reply parent
Dad was a drummer, me too, and he had similar thoughts about sampling. I definitely *was* elitist about that, but having come to electronic music later than most, I ended up at "so long as it moves you". Which I am now having to refine to "as long as you were moved by intent"
Russell Garner (@rgarner.bsky.social) reply parent
And I get pretty defensive about artists having their work devalued to the extent that the primary beneficiary is a tech company. Which is not what this is, so I apologise for the hysteria, while acknowledging there still is a thing to be defended, that requires defending.
Russell Garner (@rgarner.bsky.social) reply parent
Ok that's a good article. That's a proper artist's voice. I get ultra-defensive about this because of things like Suno. Because of people who want cachet without any artistic input, without putting in any hours. As an accessory.
Russell Garner (@rgarner.bsky.social) reply parent
The principle applies even if the bubble wasn't bursting then. No time for ML in this stuff. It's anathema to music.
Russell Garner (@rgarner.bsky.social) reply parent
Sampling is one thing. It's creation as tribute, a direct application of taste. This isn't.This is taking pre-digested, blended chyme from an actor with no taste and removing the struggle inherent to art. It is an abomination. It is the very opposite of a human speaking their truth to another human.

"I have so little confidence in myself I'm happy to ask for a simulacrum from a company that will jack up its prices for compute." Fuck that. This guy should change his artist name to Spokesperson.
Russell Garner (@rgarner.bsky.social) reply parent
There's "happy accident" and then there's "whatever the fuck this is". It's a no from me. If you're asking a machine to draw from its averages, you're giving up your voice. All those "influences" stated on band recruitment? This is saying "I didn't bother".

What do you mean, "Until" is capitalised after a hyphen. And "Tariffs". And "one-sided" needs hyphenating to make a compound adjective. I guess the fact that I can fit the errors into one post instead of a thread and still have room to explain is signal enough, though...

I can get value out of them. But the gap between the value it's possible to get and the claims being made for them is more of a void. And in the meantime, all humanity is being drained from work
Russell Garner (@rgarner.bsky.social) reply parent
Absolutely. I'd prefer not to be using it at all but search engines are comprehensively broken now and writings on matters are becoming scarcer as everyone defers to the stochastics. I lost a bit of internal capability when search engines came in. Without care, I stand to lose a lot more from LLMs.
Russell Garner (@rgarner.bsky.social) reply parent
You know, like we can carry on like we have been before LLMs, and we can all take pride, humanity and a reason for being from the whole situation. Or we can allow "leaders" to make the economic case for abject dehumanisation and grind down everyone who's left.
Russell Garner (@rgarner.bsky.social)
The amazing thing about mentoring is that juniors not only learn – and damn quickly in a lot of cases – it's also that everyone gets a little bit of oxytocin from the whole encounter. Compare that with pleading with Copilot to for god's sake make the change you've just requested 3 times already.
James Youngman (@jyoungman.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
And that's assuming that the technology can do the work of a junior at the quality of a junior. If it can't, that only speeds up the destruction because now seniors have to babysit the sabotage machine, reducing the amount of senior-level work getting done. Gen AI can't do junior work.
James Youngman (@jyoungman.bsky.social) reposted
I don't get how people don't realize that a technology that replaces junior and entry level positions in a field destroys that field. There's no skipping steps. You have to be a junior before you can be a senior, and if you don't have senior people, you don't have a field.
