Crime is literally lower than it has been in the entire life of every single non-senior-citizen American. If you are under age 65 you have never lived at a time with lower property crime rates, lower violent crime rates or lower homicide rates. Never.

Philly police don't do chases any more since an entire family of pedestrians (mom, dad, baby in stroller) were run over and killed by one of the cars involved in a police chase, sometime around 1990. Let's hope the Feds change their policy before that happens in DC.

4 12x18 inch posters on a brick and concrete wall. The top left is pink and says funding science saves lives, written in microbes, next to a microscope. The one on the right says Biology is bigger than binaries, with a fish, a lily, and a bee. The bottom left says Protecting wildlife starts wtih you, with a bunch of adiorable woodland creatues in yellow, white and black, including an owl, fungi, a... um. weasel? salamanders, butterflies, slugs, and a rotting log. The bottom right says Will our oceans thrive or nosedive the choice is yours, with the ocean represented in a circle, half of which is dead and half of which is alive, including kelp and a mackerel

The white supremacist mass shooter’s defense attorney stated that he acted because he believed that “he had to stop the invasion because that’s what his president was telling him … He thought, if he doesn’t do it, then nobody’s going to do it. He’s got to start.”

it's so obvious at this point that the american right wing, despite all their posturing about how they're pro-business, has absolutely not a single clue how actually producing items - be it ag, manufactured goods, etc - at scale is accomplished

Disaster for tourism, but a new opportunity for the bail bond industry!

having a chat with a friend in neuro today and man, its not appreciated the degree to which funding has fucked a bunch of research. Like a lot multi-million dollar projects in the last run, absolutely dying on the vine

Fun fact: I went through zillions of pages of declassified documents from 1989-95 as a former WWII historian, but few were as earth-shattering as this discovery: Homer Simpson worked on the Manhattan Project. He was present at the creation!!!😱

I'm usually on the not remembering side and have gotten sufficiently old and sufficiently not caring about being embarrassed in social interactions to just ask their name.

the USA built a system of higher education so good that smart/rich people from across the world came here, spending billions to learn here, subsidizing education for Americans while spending money to live in our cities and towns. our government arbitrarily decided we should stop doing that

I enjoy a walk to get an espresso or latte around 3 or 4 in the afternoon. The closest place to me is open, but doesn't have an espresso machine. The second closest has espresso, but closes at 3PM. I need to walk all the way over to the third closest place, which is open until 6:00. Suffering!

There are signs for a Decoy Museum on 95 in Maryland. It is, in fact, not a decoy, but a real museum, featuring a lot of decoys, or fake ducks made of painted wood.

I learned long ago not to park in front of that Wawa. Much better chance of having an intact car by parking in the loading zone down the block.
