They took some random sans serif typeface and hit the S with an ugly-stick? Also there's something off about the splines at the point where it curves down towards the bottom. Looks sloppy.

I have now paid, from my own Google Pay account, âŹ10,60, for a 24 hour ticket that I will use for a single journey to the airport. I actually have no idea if this is a valid ticket for the S-Bahn, but I'm pretty far past caring at this point. At least I tried. /fin
Rolf Smeds (@rolfsmeds.bsky.social) reply parent
The S45 is rolling in to the station now. I decide to do a last second hail mary : I tap back, then select 24-Stunden-Karte because in this household we do NOT LOCALIZE the most important strings in the app. I quickly select BC, Adult fare, valid from Now, tap purchase, and... 13/
Rolf Smeds (@rolfsmeds.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm finally at the finish line! I tap the Purchase Ticket Now button at the bottom and... I get a form validation error: missing field. I double and triple check. THERE ARE NO OTHER FIELDS. I tap each field to make sure they indeed have values. They do. 12/
Rolf Smeds (@rolfsmeds.bsky.social) reply parent
The S45 will arrive any fucking second now, so I pick BC. Then I check the options for the Regeltarif selection field (because again why the fuck would you localize field labels?), but leave it at the default adult fare. The last field is Valid From, set to Now, and readonly. Sure, ok... 11/
Rolf Smeds (@rolfsmeds.bsky.social) reply parent
There is, however, a helpful little text below the BC option that says it includes, and I quote: "BER airport (Schönefeld)" Schönefeld was one of the old airports of Berlin. It has been closed since 2020. So I have no idea if zone BC includes the new airport I'm heading to. 11/
Rolf Smeds (@rolfsmeds.bsky.social) reply parent
Speaking of zones, the next field is for selecting the zone. I'm not at all familiar with Berlin fare zones, so I'm relieved to see there's a map! Unfortunately, the map is an unzoomable image approximately 4cm wide on my screen. A thumbnail. None of labels on it are even remotely legible. 10/
Rolf Smeds (@rolfsmeds.bsky.social) reply parent
Because I have clearly time traveled to 1854, the app can't seem to fill in my departure location based on, you know, my actual location. So I tapety-tap S, Ă, D, K, R and select the station. (I'm not sure why the point of departure is even relevant, as I'm buying a zone fare, but whatevs...) 9/
Rolf Smeds (@rolfsmeds.bsky.social) reply parent
So I go back to the fare purchase view, select Einzelfarhausweis because sure, why the fuck would you localize THAT part of the app to English? Luckily I read German pretty well so I actually know what the options are. So I start to fill in the form to buy a single fare ticket... 8/
Rolf Smeds (@rolfsmeds.bsky.social) reply parent
Instead, I get a form to fill in my address, because of course. All this has taken so much time that the 30ish minutes are almost up, the train arrives any minute, so I decide I don't have time to fill in my fucking address and just use the Google Pay option, which amazingly is preconfigured. 7/

I give up on the Red Slow Death and stare desperately on the route listing in Google Maps. Then I notice a Purchase Fare (or some such) icon next to the S45, so I tap that, which takes me to the BVG app in the app store. Hmm, different transit system, but maybe that works too? I install... /5

...only to end up at the same list of unselectable trains. All of this takes an absolute eternity, because the machine is mindbogglingly slow. It registers taps with the speed of a glacier and the accuracy of a wet sponge. It loads screens as if through a 9.6kbit dial-up modem in 1993. /4
Rolf Smeds (@rolfsmeds.bsky.social) reply parent
There is an arrow button next to it, but tapping that just opens a useless info dialog. So I go back to the initial listing, and confirm that they ARE selectable. Alas, the S45 is still not amongst them. I end up in some longer wizard type flow and tap through each step... /3
Rolf Smeds (@rolfsmeds.bsky.social) reply parent
I want to buy a ticket for that train, so I go to the VBB ticket machine (a.k.a. The Red Slow Death). The machine only lists the next 3 departing trains as options, none of which are the S45. So I tap Other Routes or whatever to see more, and there is my S45. But it cannot be selected! 2/
Rolf Smeds (@rolfsmeds.bsky.social)
I feel like I need to rant about the 10th circle of hell, i.e. #Berlin public transport ticket vending machines (Yes, this is about you, #VBB #BVG) This Wednesday, I was at SĂŒdkreutz station on my way to the airport. I like to use cooking analogies, e.g. imagine saying "we'll make the pizza gluten free later". It's theoretically possible you just have to carefully detach the toppings, cheese and tomato sauce from the crust, and move them onto a new gluten-free crust. But it's a LOT more effort.

Actually, EU directive 2024/1098 requires all jokes that mention health care services to end with a reminder of the superiority of public health care systems. E.g. "But doctor, I AM Pagliacci!" "Ah well, but at least we are in Europe, so I won't charge you an exorbitant fee for my useless advice."
