Of the many reasons this is a bad answer — the kind of answer I would delight to get in cross-examination because it makes the speaker look shifty and untrustworthy - is that “maintain or rebuild institutions” is not particularly less abstract than “democracy under threat.” It’s just less direct.

And that's not even factoring charging for it. They're not set up for it. "Well just ho-" IF you can get one of the 'networks' to agree to it? You eat all the power setup costs, all the building costs, maintenance and repairs are at their whim, and you only get a fixed payment.
RootWyrm (@rootwyrm.com) reply parent
I talked about it with a gas station owner I see regularly. He can't add a charging space because then he needs another parking spot (zoning,) a power service upgrade, a large transformer, etc. Over $150k in cost. Without solar. Most stations don't have anywhere near that cash.
RootWyrm (@rootwyrm.com) reply parent
Because of cost-benefit. It's not even remotely there. People saying otherwise are absolutely delusional. To not have someone taking up that spot for 2+ hours, you need more solar footprint than the entire gas station and then some. PLUS you'd need grid PLUS maintenance PLUS installation...

That's the other problem... the only way to get where I was going when I took Amtrak? Waiting at a completely unlit, unstaffed 'station' an hour from my house at 11PM. Which was NOT in a good part of the town. The route didn't go through the nice station at all.

RootWyrm (@rootwyrm.com) reply parent
But also a fundamental problem is simply: how many people are going between any given two points per day, that also can/will put up with a much slower trip, excluding the Northeast Corridor? Not many.
RootWyrm (@rootwyrm.com) reply parent
Also, that 4 days is... optimistic. Because Amtrak doesn't own any of the rail network; it's all owned by the Class 1's. Who get to tell Amtrak "woah now, we've got a freight train full of poop that's way more important so you just park up and wait." And do. Often.

Yeah, that is *exactly* my thought. If the coolant in the overflow was not 55C, then the sensor's value is valid, but also proven incorrect. It should be within 5C of reported value. It's very likely that the sensor is stuck reading *high* while testing seemingly good. This IS a common failure mode!
RootWyrm (@rootwyrm.com) reply parent
... like, can you stick a thermometer in the overflow maybe and verify roughly? Because if it's still at 55C after 2.5 hours, that would mean it somehow got hotter than the boiling point of glycol.
RootWyrm (@rootwyrm.com) reply parent
Wait, WHAT? O.o The coolant is reading 55C, after sitting with no power, for 2.5 hours, in an ambient of 27C? And the coolant is *actually* 55C or thereabouts??
RootWyrm (@rootwyrm.com) reply parent
So 708 ohms *through* the sensor, that's 100% good. 0.78k is in the expected range (it's like... +-5C normal accuracy, no joke.) Try wiggling some wires at the CTS, and the probes in the pins a bit, see if they make things change?
RootWyrm (@rootwyrm.com) reply parent
Oh! OH! Okay! Then the sensor IS good. Yes, 780 would be around 55C give or take. (These aren't high precision, obviously.) But the pins on the connector side are definitely MIA? Just hotdog down a hallway? O.o
RootWyrm (@rootwyrm.com) reply parent
Wait, wut? That's... 780 it should be too hot to touch the coolant, that's about 140F! But it's not reading that through the harness, and the wire colors do match on the CTS connector side??
