lots of things SUCK about education as a career and especially now (the eternal caveat that I'm in a great spot and am extraordinarily lucky, yadda yadda) but man, I've known some teachers that just . . . don't seem to like kids? like, at all? like what are you even doing here, man?
maybe it seems weird that I'm going on so long about this girl, but imo if you talk to a teacher who's been at it for a bit and can't immediately rattle off a list of students that they just adore and admire and could gush about endlessly, I'd . . . find that extremely questionable tbh
most kids who are brilliant at everything go for STEM fields/majors (at least initially), because *waves hand at society* objectively it's good for some to go the other way, but when this girl told me she wanted to major in a humanities field I couldn't help feeling like I'd lost one lmao
some students make boneheaded mistakes on tests and quizzes, and you just feel awful because you know they're gonna take it really hard, so you try to be as gentle as possible and there are others that you write "GIRL WHAT ARE YOU DOING" on the paper, which is what I did once to this kid
aside from the "general decency" scale, for me to find a person at all interesting or worthwhile, they gotta have *something* they're interested enough in to have passionate opinions about.
two years ago this happened in one of my AP Physics classes and one girl (one of my all-time faves now) responded to everyone else's surprise with "I knew this because I google all my teachers but I didn't know how to bring it up without sounding like a creep"
a thing I've learned is to not tell my students about Jeopardy at the beginning of the year because it hits so much harder when a kid finds out halfway through the year, marches into class, and shouts "YOU WERE ON JEOPARDY?" to the general shock of the class
