Civil war sucks. All war sucks. But it's a historical fact of human history, and aggressors must be faced eyes-wide-open with an understanding that the good and peaceful options require a willingness on all parties to use them honestly. Otherwise the aggressors will take and never stop.
Not quite. I am saying they were ABSOLUTELY NOT unarmed civilians. Calling them that changes history. As active enemy combatants, they are legitimate targets of lethal force, which isn't the same as indiscriminate slaughter. Surrendering, injured, or fleeing restores them to unlawful target.
I am no psychopath, I don't edit history to make it easier to deal with. Nor do I feel a need to insult you by diagnosing you online due to a disagreement. They met your definition. You can classify them as you choose though. But if I were on the jury, enemy combatant.
They were armed. They had clubs, knives, pepper spray, and not a few had guns. Lethal weapons. They built a gallows. They had several militias with chains of command, coordinating with each other. And they declared the election false and sought to change it-which is the declaration you want.
I disagree. A riot is not organized, and doesn't intend to kill government officials as a way to change government action. Tell me, what else would they need to have done for you to consider them enemy combatants? Succeed at killing enough congressmen to change the vote?
"buys off" is a simplification. It's partly spending money on campaigns to improve the odds a favorable candidate wins. It's partly using money to send advocates to dinners, shows, etc to talk to electeds, in non-obvious lobbying. And obvious lobbying. And, sometimes, plain bribery.
Were they, at that time, civilians? They were engaging in an organized attack on government, with the intent to change an election. Until it is settled in a proper court-they were enemies attacking the constitutionally-established government of the US. Enemy combatants by their own choice & act.
