Finally! 🤩 Our position piece: Against the Uncritical Adoption of 'AI' Technologies in Academia: doi.org/10.5281/zeno... We unpick the tech industry’s marketing, hype, & harm; and we argue for safeguarding higher education, critical thinking, expertise, academic freedom, & scientific integrity. 1/n

Abstract: Under the banner of progress, products have been uncritically adopted or even imposed on users — in past centuries with tobacco and combustion engines, and in the 21st with social media. For these collective blunders, we now regret our involvement or apathy as scientists, and society struggles to put the genie back in the bottle. Currently, we are similarly entangled with artificial intelligence (AI) technology. For example, software updates are rolled out seamlessly and non-consensually, Microsoft Office is bundled with chatbots, and we, our students, and our employers have had no say, as it is not considered a valid position to reject AI technologies in our teaching and research. This is why in June 2025, we co-authored an Open Letter calling on our employers to reverse and rethink their stance on uncritically adopting AI technologies. In this position piece, we expound on why universities must take their role seriously toa) counter the technology industry’s marketing, hype, and harm; and to b) safeguard higher education, critical thinking, expertise, academic freedom, and scientific integrity. We include pointers to relevant work to further inform our colleagues. Figure 1. A cartoon set theoretic view on various terms (see Table 1) used when discussing the superset AI (black outline, hatched background): LLMs are in orange; ANNs are in magenta; generative models are in blue; and finally, chatbots are in green. Where these intersect, the colours reflect that, e.g. generative adversarial network (GAN) and Boltzmann machine (BM) models are in the purple subset because they are both generative and ANNs. In the case of proprietary closed source models, e.g. OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Apple’s Siri, we cannot verify their implementation and so academics can only make educated guesses (cf. Dingemanse 2025). Undefined terms used above: BERT (Devlin et al. 2019); AlexNet (Krizhevsky et al. 2017); A.L.I.C.E. (Wallace 2009); ELIZA (Weizenbaum 1966); Jabberwacky (Twist 2003); linear discriminant analysis (LDA); quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA). Table 1. Below some of the typical terminological disarray is untangled. Importantly, none of these terms are orthogonal nor do they exclusively pick out the types of products we may wish to critique or proscribe. Something I didn't get to say yesterday: We heard over and over during the event about "human-centered" approaches to "AI". But if refusal is not on the table (at every level: individual students and teachers right up through UNESCO) then we have in fact centered the technology, not the people.

Yesterday's perambulation along Huddersfield Narrow canal from Greenfield to Mossley.

A collage of photos of canal bridges on the Huddersfield Narrow canal. The largest image top left is of a bridge that is a very slightly arched square, with a weeping willow hanging over the left hand side. On top right is a very square bridge with the towpath on the left of the picture which is the opposite of most of the pictures. Centre and lower right bridges both have circular arches. Centre bottom is a view of grass and locks and bottom right is an arch under one of the bridges out of which water is flowing at some speed. A collage of photos of bridges. Upper right has a view of a paved path with a gently curving wall up to the bridge with a view of mill building, hills and sky. Upper left is a tall bridge with an overspill rejoining the canal on the left hand side. Middle left is a view of the canal gently curving through a wooded area, lower left is a modern road bridge with graffiti underneath saying

Visited Folly Dolly Falls near Meltham and the Marsden end of the Standedge tunnel on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal today. Been too warm for big walks recently but today was just a tiny bit to mean a future canal walk can start at the station.

A waterfall of a small stream spread out across many levels of dark brown rocks creating many tiny white falls. The fall is surrounded by green, moss, ferns and trees. A collage of photos taken near the Marsden end of the Standedge Tunnel on the Huddersfield Narrow canal. The upper right is a large brick building with red doors on multiple levels and the canal in the foreground. There is sun on the building and dark clouds in the sky behind. The upper left is the tow path on the right hand side of the canal, below which is a view of a red bridge crossing the canal. Bottom left is a view of the railway in a right to left curve to where it enters a tunnel, with a curving set of steps with water flowing down them going from left to right on a bridge over the railway, down the steps and then under the railway. Bottom centre is the canal entrance to the tunnel and bottom right is a white bridge over the canal in bright sunlight.

Question for my rare book librarian friends: do libraries insure against user destruction? E.g. someone, say, coming in with a pen and scribbling all over an expensive book, or cutting a page out with scissors? Or would a policy only cover natural disaster (fire, flood) and other accidents?

A tall black mesh backed gaming chairs with a green blanket, a small black box and a DM screen on the seat. The DM screen is a rectangular piece of leather, slightly bigger than an A4 sheet of paper, and the side facing the camera is in galaxy print leather with a beautiful Celtic style dragon design embossed on it in gold. There are two folding sections attached with brass buttons that are folded away behind the main screen. An open DM screen with galaxy print leather on the outside and brown leather within. Various name tags for characters are clipped to the top of the screen but have been labelled with project names. A few pieces of card are attached to the screen with magnets.

Originally this week I had four days when I was scheduled to be at @thejohnrylands.bsky.social It ended up being only two but thankfully I got my fill of glorious gothic architecture. Just staff and a few researchers in which is a big contrast from when it's busy with visitors.

A stained glass window in a gothic room with arched ceiling, stone carvings on the wall and arched doorways leading to an area where more windows and the tops of bookshelves can be seen. There is a white marble statue of a bearded gentleman in a frock coat looking at the camera.

📚💙 I found some book tokens that were at least 9 years old in a decorated pouch in a box of art stuff. I'm not sure I'd ever known anything was in the pouch. They'd expired, but @nationalbooktokens.bsky.social will send you a replacement if you fill out a form on their website. This arrived today 😃
