Something I didn't get to say yesterday: We heard over and over during the event about "human-centered" approaches to "AI". But if refusal is not on the table (at every level: individual students and teachers right up through UNESCO) then we have in fact centered the technology, not the people.

There's a nice story which I've heard about some Americans who came over to investigate a plane crash in the hills above Lauder, at Common Riding, went home and then came back to visit at Hogmanay (or possibly vice versa) so had a very skewed idea of how much of a party town generally Lauder is.

We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers. The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.
