This clearly shows their blatant disregard for public health and the health of their people. Florida is moving backwards and the people in these communities will face the high price.

Instead, they are banning vaccines, spreading misinformation about vaccines, initiating policies that make it harder for families to choose to get vaccinated and cutting healthcare and public health funding significantly.

This could be things such as massive education campaigns, offering vaccines free of cost to everyone, in-school vaccinations for all children, incentivizing families to be up to date on their vaccinations and more.

If Florida decided that having the highest level of intervention was too much for vaccine mandates, then a proper functioning public health unit would instead have already implemented and rolled out other interventions on that ladder.

4- Sick children means sick staff, and ultimately less learning and an unstable learning environment. 5- Allows for a more equitable and proportional approach.

2- Less intrusive interventions tend to not work as effectively and are often insufficient to allow us to achieve herd immunity. 3- Vaccination is a very effective prevention tool and generally benefits outweigh risks.

School vaccine mandates generally sit at the highest level, typically close to "restricting choice" and for good reasons: 1- The risk of harm to others is high if children are unvaccinated. This includes infecting vulnerable children & their families And the staff and administration at the school.

The Nuffield ladder of interventions helps determine ethical justifications and proportionality of interventions, which have to be weighed against the severity of the issue at stake, what the public health goals are and individual liberty and intrusiveness of the policy at hand.

Public health frameworks fundamentally require that the level of intervention be proportional to the risks being addressed. Let's talk about what public health really means in terms of policy and intervention.

A while ago I talked about the Nuffield Ladder of Interventions, a core principle in public health, but in the context of mask mandates. Today I want to talk about it in the context of vaccine mandates, particularly with the news coming from Florida.

My biggest issue with Florida removing vaccine mandates for all vaccines in schools is that they have not instead chosen another tactic or intervention to replace these. Which means they have effectively decided that public health is not a mandate they consider worthy of undertaking.

Also keeping in mind that we are a small country with limited stock, & provinces have been purchasing fewer doses because of the lower demand. I have expanded on that below in these two slides. Point #4 in particular is relevant.

AMERICAN AND WANT TO GET A COVID-19 VACCINE IN CANADA? You may or may not require a prescription from a Canadian physician. Most provinces don't need a prescription for the COVID-19 vaccine. The only possible way to obtain a private pay vaccine is by calling pharmacies and asking if they are able to purchase the non-publicly funded/private pay doses. Some provinces allow purchase for private pay and some #4 don't. They may ask you to find others who also want to get vaccinated so they can purchase in bulk and may ask you to pre-pay as well. Your best bet would be to target border towns since they likely have more experience with this and may get many such requests. unambiquous SCIENCE Sabina Vohra-Miller

I feel so much for Americans, with the US restrict access to COVID-19 vaccines (whatever happened to choice?!!). Many have asked about obtaining doses in Canada, but because we have a predominantly public pay system for the COVID-19 vaccines, it will be challenging.

#1 AMERICAN AND WANT TO GET A COVID-19 VACCINE IN CANADA? The COVID-19 vaccine is predominantly publicly funded in most provinces, obtaining it out of pocket is challenging. Provinces purchase limited stock for public use, generally based on what we require for Canadians to get immunized. We are a small country compared to the US. #2 For publicly funded COVID-19 vaccines, every province has different rules on non-resident eligibility. While many provinces don't require a Canadian health card or proof of residency, most state that eligibility for non-residents is specifically for those who are either studying or working in Canada, visiting for long periods, undocumented, refugee status, etc. unambiguous SCIENCE Sabina Vohra-Miller

NOVAVAX UPDATE 1*1 I feel it is highly unlikely for us to have any Nuvaxovid for the upcoming 2025-2026 vaccination campaign. However, with Sanofi acquiring the rights, it makes me very hopeful for vaccine supply and distribution for fall of 2026. It remains to be seen on what will occur of Novavax. NOVAVAX UPDATE 1*1 In 2021, the Canadian government signed a deal to produce domestic vaccines with Novavax. The government's deal with Novavax was contingent on the company obtaining regulatory approval for producing a vaccine using ingredients made at the Biologics Manufacturing Centre (BMC) in Montreal before the end of December 2024. The company was unable to deliver on this, and so in March of 2025, the government terminated their deal (and had to pay a significant amount to do so). unambiquous SCIENCE Sabina Vohra-Miller

On Novavax, this is what I know so far. In 2021 we signed a deal to produce domestic vaccines. The deal to purchase Novavax doses was contingent on them being produced domestically, with a deadline of end of year 2024. That didn’t happen, so the deal was cancelled. I don’t know what happens next.

Moderna just received Health Canada authorization for its updated LP.8.1 variant COVID-19 vaccine. The exciting part? It will be manufactured domestically! Their authorization allows parts of the vaccine to be produced at Moderna’s new facility in Quebec, while the fill-finish will be handled by Novocol Pharma in Ontario. I’ll tell you why. It’s because he has already said previously that he was considering reviewing vaccines that contain aluminum, which he stated were linked to autoimmune diseases and allergies. Is he looking for studies that fit his false narrative?

Isn’t this exactly what he has said he intended to conduct in the US for vaccines? So why, then, is he bullying and intimidating the journal (Annals of Internal Medicine) to retract the study on absolutely no basis??

This was a very thorough and robust study, perhaps one of the strongest types of studies that could be conducted in such a large scale, where even small increases of adverse events could be discerned. Shouldn’t this be exactly what RFK Jr would want to see and do?

Recently, a large Danish study, involving over 1.2 million children and spanning 21 years of research found that cumulative aluminum ingredients in vaccines DO NOT increase health risks for children.

HHS is terminating 22 mRNA vaccine development investments, predominantly related to COVID-19, influenza & avian flu for reasons that are entirely invalid. Calling mRNA vaccine platform ineffective & unsafe is blatantly false. But you’d need to know a thing or two about science to understand this.

This is not practicing evidence-based medicine, it is instead going to actively harm pregnant and post-partum parents and their babies.

As with everything, it needs to be a risk vs benefit discussion. Makary at the FDA instead is focusing solely on the risks of SSRIs (which aren't even clear, & if they do exist, are very low), without taking into consideration the benefits of these meds & the risks of untreated mental illness.

Many studies have shown clearly that pregnant people with depression who receive proper treatment have better outcomes for both themselves and their babies versus those with untreated depression.

2- But most importantly, untreated or not properly managed depression and anxiety carry huge risks, both especially to the pregnant person but also for the newborn.

But even then, the absolute risk was very low & the number needed to treat to harm, a term we call NNTH was high. NNTH indicates how many need to be exposed to a risk factor for one person to experience a harmful outcome. This tells us the overall safety of SSRIs & SNRIs in pregnancy is very high.

But there are two important takeaways: 1- The studies that show a slight association with birth defects or neurodevelopmental concerns have many flaws, so it is difficult to determine if their results are even valid.

2/8/2025, 11:08:31 PM | 10 0 | View on Bluesky | view

Majority of the studies show absolutely no increase in any kind of teratogenicity_or birth defects or neurodevelopmental concerns with the use of SSRIs and SNRIs in pregnancy. However a small handful have shown a very slight increase in heart defects or other birth defects and ADHD or Autism.

And so with that, there are of course always going to be concerns about the validity of the data and results since studies may not be rigorous or well-designed and there is always the potential to be susceptible to confounders or other variables that impact outcomes. So what does the data show?
