I will remind folks those images of Nazi book burnings aren't burning just any books. They're burning the library of Magnus Hirschfeld; a gay, Jewish doctor who created an institute dedicated to LGBTQ sex education and healthcare. And a man who pioneered gender affirming care surgeries.

For me, it’s helped to realized that if I overwhelm myself with things I can’t control, I’ll be too mentally burnt out to help in areas where I CAN make a difference. It’s about conserving energy so I can still be effective, I guess.

After all, I can’t control what happens in the whole world. But I can control my own actions, and those actions can make a small difference in my little slice of the world. And if we all focus on what we could do with our own little parts of the world, maybe we can turn this thing around.

Yep, exactly! In fact, I think that’s exactly the approach we need. But doing it the other way provokes unnecessary outrage/anxiety among progressives in the current climate. Which is great for clicks, but not for mental health when the world is already such a mess (and we’re already anxious).

For three weeks in May, the fate of the world rested on the shoulders of a corporate recruiter on the outskirts of Toronto. Allan Brooks, 47, had discovered a novel mathematical formula, one that could take down the internet and power inventions like a force-field vest and a levitation beam. Or so he believed. Mr. Brooks, who had no history of mental illness, embraced this fantastical scenario during conversations with ChatGPT that spanned 300 hours over 21 days. He is one of a growing number of people who are having persuasive, delusional conversations with generative A.I. chatbots that have led to institutionalization, divorce and death.

In an incredible overreach, the province is rejecting the municipality's Regional Plan. A municipal press release:

Public Service Announcement Update on the status of the municipality’s Regional Plan Monday, Aug. 11, 2025 (Halifax, N.S.) – On Friday, Aug. 8, 2025, the Halifax Regional Municipality received a letter from the Province of Nova Scotia’s Minister of Municipal Affairs in response to the municipality’s submission of the updated Regional Plan. In the letter, the Minister indicated that the Regional Plan, as submitted, could not be accepted by the province and therefore could not be approved. Underway since 2020, the Regional Planning process has incorporated years of extensive public engagement to inform updates to the 2014 Regional Plan – aimed at supporting sustainable growth across our region. On Thursday, June 19, 2025, Regional Council passed a motion to repeal the existing 2014 Regional Municipal Planning Strategy (also known as the Regional Plan) and adopt the proposed 2025 Regional Municipal Planning Strategy with related amendments to other planning documents including the Regional Subdivision By-Law, Secondary Municipal Planning Strategies and Land Use By-Laws. In accordance with the Halifax Regional Municipality Charter, adoption of the Regional Plan and other planning documents is subject to provincial review and approval. Over the past several months, municipal Planning & Development staff have been actively working with provincial staff to address feedback that had been previously received from the province. The decision by the province to not approve any of the proposed amendments was not expected, given the ongoing collaboration with provincial counterparts leading up to and following the submission for approval. Moving forward, this means that the current 2014 Regional Plan, last amended in May 2025, remains in effect, as the new proposed amendments have not been approved by the province. Over the coming weeks, municipal staff will re-engage with the province to determine the next steps on the planning process and ensure the Regional Plan …

I write a lot of letters and emails to politicians and news outlets, yes. I often post them here so that people who don’t have time to write theirs from scratch can borrow from what I’ve written. But thanks for checking in?

This family does not deserve to be subjected to all the armchair detective speculation this Globe & Mail article will inspire. Journalists — and everyone else — need to leave the family alone unless police bring something new to light, or we discover police have mishandled something.

It bothers me a lot. The public deserves to know if they are in danger. It deserves to know of the children were found, and/or what happened to them, if we ever find out. This family does not deserve to have every vulnerable detail of their lives made public across the country ——>

Just read the Globe & Mail article by Lindsay Jones and Greg Mercer, about the missing children in Pictou and I have Strong Feelings. I’m not going to post a link, but it reeks of poverty shaming and contains no actual new information—just sensationalizes the lives of people in this rural area.

The ā€œturn off commentsā€ feature is vastly underused on Facebook. If you are an NS park and you’re posting a PSA about the fire ban, for the love of all that is holy TURN OFF COMMENTS.

The Life of Chuck is a beautiful wistful movie and everyone should watch it.

This makes me want to go back to pens and notebooks and play with paint and ink and paper and never ever touch a computer again.

This feels like a very extreme extension of three toxic trends: -the both sides thing we’re seeing in journalism -thinking ā€œeveryone has a right to an opinionā€ means that everyone’s opinion counts as a fact -ppl trying to use their own trauma as an excuse for hurting others

He’s not being subjective either. Using the word ā€œvictimā€ implies there’s an abuser. Otherwise they wouldn’t be a victim. It’s like saying, ā€œSorry Judge. We’re going to have to ask you to step aside from this particular case because you have a long history of siding with the victims.ā€

I mean, let’s look at what he’s saying here: institutions that don’t take the side of a perpetrator are somehow wrong because of it? That a good society would take the side of the abuser at least SOMETIMES? What is the argument here?

Wow this is wild. I’m not going to unpack the rest of this, or comment on Christianity etc, but I just want to say that anyone who criticizes something by saying, ā€œYou know, it always takes the side of the victim,ā€ is not a society minded person people in power should be allowed to listen to. 🧵
