.@velshi.com “Head in the sand”? Please. Part of the problem is limp news coverage that turns every Dem wobble into a five-alarm fire while treating GOP extremism as background noise. That’s what depresses our base.

He's not even the first. Patty Murray was on it, and Schumer has been on it as well. Those are just the ones I've seen. Most Democrats want him gone, but not all get the attention.
sandrimeth.bsky.social (@sandrimeth.bsky.social) reply parent
Schumer called for his firing; it just didn't get attention on this site because he isn't Bernie Sanders. As did Sen Patty Murray. And I haven't seen a statement from Jeffries recently, but he's been speaking out against RFK Jr for a long time.

It's not a good thing, but it is a necessary thing. Long term, there needs to be serious national level districting reform to prevent this (i personally want proportional rep, as it's impossible to gerrymander), but for now the Democrats have to fight with the weapons they have.

I said the communists (not socialists) , who were far left, saw the social democrats, who were more towards center left than the KPD, as the primary enemy and spent more time trying to be long of the left hill. This backfired and communists were absolutely sent to camps.
sandrimeth.bsky.social (@sandrimeth.bsky.social) reply parent
This is the same mindset being criticized in the original post as I read it. People as recently as last election cycle spent far too much energy fighting against people who shared most of their views as opposed to the people who shared almost none of them.
sandrimeth.bsky.social (@sandrimeth.bsky.social) reply parent
It's a mix. The leader of the German communist party didn't like Hitler, but he was an accelerationist who thought the social Democrats were their primary enemy, rather than the fascists, and thought they Hitler would be a temporary stumbling block on the way to a Communist utopia.

It shouldn't get lost that just today, Senate Republicans have voted to close nursing homes, close rural hospitals, and cut food stamp benefits for children and veterans.

But the actual arguments at hand were these: 1.) Basic government functions, like building roads, is not socialism, which the other guy was saying and, 2.) National politicians running on being a socialist is a bad idea that will lose elections to the right and result in worse government.
sandrimeth.bsky.social (@sandrimeth.bsky.social) reply parent
It's more politically oriented with much more centralized control than other ideologies that fall under the same umbrella. Or in other words, communism is socialism, but not all socialism is communism.
sandrimeth.bsky.social (@sandrimeth.bsky.social) reply parent
Nah, the basic definition of socialism is social/common ownership of the means of production. It's achieved to various degrees in different nations, but it's the basic form of it, and it's a broad term. Communism is a more specific ideology that falls under the broader umbrella of socialism.

Is it too much to ask that a Democrat win a general election in a red district before we start dunking on “the establishment”. Preferably a federal office. I’m glad people are motivated but good lord. Making NYC bluer is like making Chattanooga reder.
sandrimeth.bsky.social (@sandrimeth.bsky.social) reply parent
Monarchies, dictatorships, oligarchies, etc all had roads built by the local government to facilitate trade. Socialism is not "Government does stuff." All socialism is, is an economic system by which the means of production is owned by the community as a whole rather than by private interests.
sandrimeth.bsky.social (@sandrimeth.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm not a socialist, and the whole fucking country definitely isn't. You'll find people, like me, who believe in a strong social safety net, institutions, and regulations as appropriate to prevent the worst excesses of unfettered capitalism, but that's not socialism. That's just government working.
sandrimeth.bsky.social (@sandrimeth.bsky.social) reply parent

sandrimeth.bsky.social (@sandrimeth.bsky.social) reply parent
And the one time Democrats had a supermajority that could have gotten past that. 1.) It was for 1/2 a year, which they used to get the ACA passed. 2.) The Democratic Party is a coalition, and one of the 60 votes they had wouldn't have helped break filibuster to be able to keep their seat.
sandrimeth.bsky.social (@sandrimeth.bsky.social) reply parent
The Democratic Party has never, ever, ever had the opportunity or political clout to be able to pass a legislative action codifying abortion rights. It would have been filibustered by Republicans if it came up
sandrimeth.bsky.social (@sandrimeth.bsky.social) reply parent
It means they aren't abandoning LGBTQ people and our rights for political power. It's a good thing to refuse to abandon the pursuit of equal rights, which I assume you agree with by your pinned post.
sandrimeth.bsky.social (@sandrimeth.bsky.social) reply parent
I may be naive, but I don't think we're getting tariffs enacted by Congress. 1.) They would be filibustered in the Senate, and I doubt Senate Republicans have the votes to kill that. 2.) Enacting tariffs is different from agreeing to let Trump do so by executive order. I predict cold feet.

How, exactly, did they screw Bernie? The truth is Bernie lost because of his flawed outreach, not because of any nefarious action. He didn't make inroads with the constituencies needed to win a Democratic primary. No conspiracy theory needed

sandrimeth.bsky.social (@sandrimeth.bsky.social) reply parent
This assumption is not a declaration that the primary was rigged. It's a statement that the court didn't bother reviewing at the level needed to dismiss the claim.
sandrimeth.bsky.social (@sandrimeth.bsky.social) reply parent
The court case you are almost certainly misunderstanding made no ruling at all, as they felt it was outside of their authority. They didn't review the facts of the case at the level required to dismiss the plaintiff's claim, so it remained at the "assumption of truth" standard.
sandrimeth.bsky.social (@sandrimeth.bsky.social) reply parent
No court ever agreed that she rigged a primary, and it was never possible for the DNC to do that. But if you didn't like her favor for Clinton, you shouldn't like any DNC official taking sides in a primary.
sandrimeth.bsky.social (@sandrimeth.bsky.social) reply parent
The DNC is supposed to be an impartial support organization for Democratic candidates, representing the whole party. Part of that is maintaining neutrality in the primaries, so they can represent all candidates. Primarying a sitting pol isn't bad, but he's trying to do two conflicting jobs.
sandrimeth.bsky.social (@sandrimeth.bsky.social) reply parent
The thing he's doing that is wrong is trying to be a DNC official (supposed to be neutral on primaries) and an activist working to primary sitting Democrats at the same time. Both are fine, but not good together. The DNC represents all Democrats, and an official taking sides muddies that.

As a former Catholic I'll say... I will choose to view this from the perspective of harm reduction. You'll probably be hard-pressed to find any candidate for Pope who isn't tainted by this. He may not be great, but a not-great Pope that the far right hates becomes good enough for the moment.

It is the Democrats who are fighting for progress, and they're the ones doing it effectively. Evidence is, you can make a very good guess about the state of trans rights in a state or territory by looking at the ruling party. Hint: it ain't the red states where things are better.
