The only somewhat concrete thing I have heard about is how much merch he sold when his merch store opened. That does seem real (it was like 300K in a day according to GQ?), but more "influencer grift real" than "political real".

When people said they wanted to be like Mike they meant -any- member of Mike and the Mechanics. Lot of people forget that.

...that apparently all happened in the last ten years, and nearly exclusively among Republicans? Yep, sure does sound like it's the universities that need to reflect and change. I'm sure rededication to in class writing, small seminars, and strong free speech protections will do the trick.
'Swas (@sbeen.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh I see so there's been a steady erosion in the belief in the university as a public good, a slow failure of universities to live up to their role as inculcators of civic virtue in the American republic...

At least half of what is happening is literally blowing the dust off of old laws, arguments, and playbooks. The articles don't say "America never did this" but rather "America hasn't done this since [Nixon/Reagan/Jim Crow/Reconstruction/the Founding]". The Robert E. Lee portrait was just in storage!

With regards to "regulatory favoritism, customers who want to curry favor, etc.", do you think the board really believes that? The whims of the administration are so fickle that even corrupt favoritism doesn't seem guaranteed. Only the risk of vengeance seems indisputable and must be terrifying.

"Education, technology, law, health, consultancy, government, university administration, finance, nonuniversity education, and nonprofits/NGOs" That list looks very different in 2025 than it did in 2021. Things have gone from bad to catastrophic, and "just leave academia" isn't sufficient advice.

If you click through to the article behind the article on salary differentials, it goes to a survey from 2021 (philosophy grads) and lists the non-academic fields in order of frequency as:

"I do not pretend to understand the moral universe, the arc is a long one, my eye reaches but little ways. I cannot calculate the curve and complete the figure by the experience of sight; I can divine it by conscience. But from what I see I am sure it bends towards justice."
'Swas (@sbeen.bsky.social) reply parent
That phrase was taken by King from the abolitionist Unitarian minister Theodore Parker, who lived from 1810-1860, and therefore never got to see the arc (that he among many was working hard to make) truly bend. To love in a time of one step back is to nevertheless push for the two steps forward.
