We need more homes near public transit in California! It will lower costs for families, make riding transit easier, make our transit systems stronger, and reduce traffic and greenhouse gas emissions. It’s common sense! Tell your Senator and Assemblymember to vote yes on SB 79!

On this Labor Day, as we face a federal regime that’s declared war on working people — dismantling unions, destroying jobs, empowering & cutting taxes for the largest corporations in the world — let’s recommit to fighting for workers, the people who actually make our country run.
Make no mistake, everything that’s happening in the United States is being significantly enabled by the right wing oligarch capture of media. Every other country needs to do everything possible to keep that from happening where they are. Including protecting the CBC from Poilievre here in Canada.
Weeks after swastikas were painted on a school in a heavily Jewish LA neighborhood, swastikas & an antisemitic conspiracy theory have been painted on an LA synagogue. This kind of vandalism is growing & flows directly from the normalization of antisemitic rhetoric on left & right. It’s appalling.
We have a ways to go, but downtown San Francisco & Union Square are coming back. More & more activity. More food offerings. More retail. More office activity. More energy. All the things. The best city in the world is back.

Block parties & slow streets are powerful ways to build community. That’s what happened on Hearst Ave. The community came together & converted Hearst into a slow street — de-prioritizing cars & prioritizing people. They started a block party, it’s a big success & a model for other communities.

Today we sent revised Congressional maps to the voters to counter the Texas/Trump rigged gerrymander. We won’t let them steal this election. Thank you, Governor Newsom, for your leadership.

It’s done. California’s Congressional redistricting plan is heading to voters. We’re fighting back. We passed the final of 3 pieces: a statute calling the election, a constitutional amendment allowing mid-decade redistricting & proposed revised maps. It’s now up to the voters.
Texas — at Trump’s demand — decided to gerrymander its House districts & try to rig the midterms to freeze GOP control even though their policies are so unpopular. CA is fighting back & sending our own redistricting plan to voters. We’re not going to sit by as they tank our democracy & core values.
Today, California is punching back & checking Trump’s excesses: We’re voting to send new Congressional district maps to the voters. As so many American institutions cave in to this tyrant — fueling his assault on democracy — California is standing strong. We’re in this fight for the long haul.

The Los Angeles City Council voted to oppose SB 79, our bill to allow more homes near public transit. But here’s the big picture: In 2019, the council voted unanimously to oppose SB 50, a prior version of this bill. Today’s vote was 8-5. That’s called progress. Let’s get the bill passed.
We’re not going to sit back in California as Trump & his Texas cronies rig the midterms. This week we’re sending a redistricting plan to the voters. Unlike in Texas, California will have transparency & voters will have the final say. They’re trying to tear down democracy. We’re building it up.
I helped kick off the first day of school at Sanchez Elementary in the Castro, a few blocks from where I live. Sanchez has lots of immigrant families. The kids were excited to be together & to learn. It’s tragic they also have to worry about ICE. ICE needs to stay the hell away from our schools.
