likewise. I found the NREL piece to be very informative and well written, also for non-electrical engineer. By the way the guy above claiming there is not enough solar energy to fuel the planet is an electrical engineer...

This is a good power on how wind+solar change the system logic. Less inertia, more counterbalances. docs.nrel.gov/docs/fy20ost...
Stepping on Stepien (@shamstepien.bsky.social) reply parent
Batteries don't actually create synthetic inertia. They can simply be programmed to modulate loading/unloading of energy to keep voltage in check thus significantly reducing the need for inertia (synthetic or physical). Agreed on the rest.

"We need either synchronous generators or technology that produces inertia in the grid for stability." - Not entirely. Distributed batteries and inverters heavily reduce the need for such generators and/or inertia production while stabilising the grid.

Which suggests he's not stupid. He lies on purpose.
Stepping on Stepien (@shamstepien.bsky.social) reply parent
Kills the investment in grid needed argument. The reality is that grid investment is needed because we're electrifying everything. Even here batteries help.
Just Kevin (@kevinleecaster.bsky.social) reposted
Much of our electricity grid – plants, power lines, and reserves – exists only to cover rare events and is underused most of the time. Batteries are perfect interim fix while we modernize our electric grids because they store and release energy as needed. 🔌💡 www.worksinprogress.news/p/the-beauty...

Stepping on Stepien (@shamstepien.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, because a lot of energy use is actually energy waste as electrifying everything makes energy use drop drastically. But even at face value he's way off.

Energy intensity of production have dropped even up to 90%, while materials used are thinner and thinner (minus the glass) by up to 75% since 2010... And yet we're supposed to believe no drop in emissions for solar since IPCC 2014? Research in solar has trouble keeping up with a fast growing tech.
Stepping on Stepien (@shamstepien.bsky.social) reply parent
I read a paper with updated input data but I just can't find it now. Oh, they also use the non-real life assumption of concrete slabs while the norm in over 95% of solar farms are mounted on screws or T-beams with no concrete.
Stepping on Stepien (@shamstepien.bsky.social) reply parent
No, mostly not the paper's fault. Almost all LCA papers use production data from IEA PVPS which uses data gathered over 10 years ago. Production processes since then have improved - less material, less energy. UNEC uses 25 years so okay, albeit solar plants on average have 32,5 year life spans.
Stepping on Stepien (@shamstepien.bsky.social) reply parent
That data from the UNEC report is bad and outdated. Emissions for new solar panels are at least three times smaller. I can't find the new research but new panels now have emissions well below 20.

Nuclear needs to refuel. So when is the best time to refuel? Outside of seasonal peaks. Also demand is not constant: it peaks in winter and summer in the US so less need for energy then. Hence the seasonal output. Nuclear in bulk plan to refuel in Spring/Autumn.

Stepping on Stepien (@shamstepien.bsky.social) reply parent
China needs a lot of energy but the investment in solar and wind means that coal use has peaked and is now dropping. No number of new plants change that as the plants are increasingly used as peaker plants.
Stepping on Stepien (@shamstepien.bsky.social) reply parent
Coal use peaked and is slowly dropping in China. New coal plants are more technologically advanced, older ones are being taken down and the overall capacity factors of plants is steadily dropping.
