The reality is that being in a good union job is a thing of privilege for many (tho is obviously shouldn’t be), and this is why there are moments of both reactionary labor struggles and insurrections that target the union structure of a particular labor aristocracy. The answer is industrial unionism
Great thread. It brings to mind a similar phenomenon in the Ulster Workers Council in N. Ireland, which amassed a general strike with the support of the fascist paramilitary the UVF to stop power sharing arrangements to stop anti-Catholic oppression. Catholics mostly were kept out of union jobs.
It sounds like it was just a military base they have repurposed a number of times.
(Note: no shade at OP, just have strong opinions on this. We should ask people involved with social movements about what works and doesn’t before lobbing advice at “the left”)
I don’t negate the role of comms in organizing, but the notion that the left shouldn’t engage in community self-defense because those who seek to harm them might make a meme on Truth Social is so disconnected from organizing that it should be understood as irrelevant agitprop.
This is a similar phenomenon to drop in journalism: drop in opinion. People who have no inside information or history on how social movements work projecting criticism about what they are certain works. That’s like me critiquing the form of a knitter because I’ve seen clothes on Instagram.
This kind of discourse highlights an overly affluent, media-first perspective on what is and is not effective organizing. Whether or not the right “farms the left for content” is irrelevant when mass action disables their ability to reproduce their movement. It’s not a member war, it’s a street one.
It is just wild to me that the largest facility used during Japanese internment will now be used to intern immigrants from ICE raids, people who are disappeared by masked officers off the streets, and there is still a debate about whether naming and shaming those doing it is fair.

This is horrifying. I did an event there years back about anti-Zionist approaches to fighting antisemitism. It was run by long-time antifascists at the time, and it has generally been an important repository for Oregon's Jewish history. Fucking shameful.

What i didn’t get to say is that this research is based on places that are far more unionized & organized where 3.5% means you have organized labor ready to shut shit down, students ready to close down schools & universities, tenant unions, retirees, govt workers etc ready to stop business as usual
This is unfortunately reminiscent of early camps in Nazi Germany, which were also widely lauded by politicians (they were by no means a secret), treated as tourist curiosities, and featured in glossy magazine spreads. It’s unfathomable to me how so many people can take such joy in human suffering.
