It was a way for white men to assert their "manliness" and remains a big part of the culture to this day.
It's been like this since slavery. Defending your honor with violence was only done by white men because it wasn't allowed by anyone else. No one else was even legally allowed to defend themselves from attack.

70 years ago, on this date, Emmett Till was kidnapped and brutally murdered by white men. His family, including his cousin who was with him at the time, is repeating the train ride he took from Chicago to Mississippi in 1955 to mark the anniversary
A few years in, a CDC drowning prevention program was ready to share its findings on how to mitigate the leading cause of death among young children. Then the administration terminated that staff.

Meanwhile, today is the 1st day of school. The outtage affects half of my neighborhood, but also 2 other towns. No traffic lights, spoiled food for those without a generator, no AC in 95° weather, and everyone is just like 🤷🏽♀️
Half of my neighborhood has been without electricity since Friday evening - it's now Monday morning. I currently have electricity, but I worry that it could go at any time. The electricity company is like 🤷🏽♀️ it could be this afternoon or it could be Wednesday, they don't know.
I spent my birthday going on a 2 mile hike that ended at the beach. Then I froliced in the water for almost an hour. It was perfect.
But was it fun?
The thing I have realized about trans people is that it's *none of my fucking business* and I should just be nice to them like any other person.
The lack of accountability at the top has trickled all the way down. Is racist behavior still illegal? Will there be witnesses to help? Are there prosecutors willing to press charges?
And that isn't a new feeling necessarily, there's always been the "you don't belong here" contingent. But now, there is a sense of impunity in which they have the freedom to act on their worst impulses.
I wonder how many successful Black people who moved into "good neighborhoods" are now looking around and realizing that they are surrounded by people who hate them?
What the next election needs is information distribution in language that people understand. Every county, every town, every city. People in the loop know what's at stake. People out of the loop won't realize until it's much too late.

Honestly, there are so many risk factors for cancer that implicate businesses in the US across every sector. It isn't economically viable to try to prevent cancer here. Growing the economy is more important than people's health. (Says the powers that be)

The most amazing person I encountered was a man who was recently freed from a wrongful conviction. He was imprisoned for 47 years! Longer than my whole life! The immensity of that blew me away.
It struck me that group reading exercises aren't very common these days, and that's unfortunate.
Some people were amazing orators, but many were regular people with enough confidence in their reading to do it in front about 20 - 30 people

I KNEW I didn't fit, but it was interesting to me that the definition of Blackness was so narrow. It is the opposite of the American one drop rule that encompasses every touch of Blackness.
I know Blackness is different in different places. In Ecuador, only my husband qualified. He touched his arm and put it next to my brown skinned daughter and shook his head, no. She was not the same.
Last week, my family vacationed in Ecuador. While we were driving from waterfalls to volcanoes. We met a parking lot attendant who was so excited to see my husband. A Black tourist was a novelty that he didn't experience frequently.
