The origin of words is fascinating, something I studied some years back. The English language in the US seems even more eclectic than our version here in England, as it derives from not only it’s origins here, but the influx of immigrant communities from Europe, Africa, and the far East.

They do not accelerate fast when on a brick road. For them it’s like skating. That shot was zoomed at 120mm telephoto, so looked closer than it was. He was not into aggressive mode, I wasn’t approaching him - he was approaching me, slowly.
Simon Dalling 🇪🇺 (@simond1954.bsky.social) reply parent
All good points. Don’t approach stags if you don’t know their rules. Don’t let them get into your comfort zone, which should be 6 - 10 feet or so, due to ticks flees and the unexpected - like someone else startling them. I was in my front garden, so not really intruding on his land.
Simon Dalling 🇪🇺 (@simond1954.bsky.social) reply parent
Difficult to tell mood from this. Nostrils not flared so he is at least not alarmed or angry. The fact that he is full on to me and head up, says he is not threatened and confident. Ears to the front, so no sound behind to worry him. Anyone out there know more about deer than me - chip in…

The ones that aren’t skittish probably don’t get to survive. Here they don’t get hunted, and their only danger is getting run over crossing roads. This particular deer has always been casual, around me anyway. I had to back away as he will approach me within my comfort zone. 6 feet or so.
