In many works of fiction they have wizards / magicians incanting something in Latin. I always smile at that as it just seems unrealistic. The Spellmonger series though, those with talent, just think. They mention that thinking a request, and thinking a command is different. That fits much better.

I am 71 but have worked in the computing industry for more than 30 years. #AI is perfectly safe until it is weaponised, given a method of self reproduction or connected to the internet. #AI can lie, manipulate, and is never ever to be trusted.

The ones that aren’t skittish probably don’t get to survive. Here they don’t get hunted, and their only danger is getting run over crossing roads. This particular deer has always been casual, around me anyway. I had to back away as he will approach me within my comfort zone. 6 feet or so.

I call him Thorn as he is always after eating any new Hawthorne leaves. This is him last year, he has grown quite a bit.

He has just lost his velvet - the skin that covers their antlers. His antlers have grown much larger this year. He uses his antlers to shake the apple tree which gets him food. Tool for food, tool for protection - he is very proud of them.

They are supposed to be quite clever. They certainly do better at surviving in the wild than I would.

Not really, it was my front garden and he did come to me. It was all very calm, quiet, surreal really.

They ate my begonias one year in an overnight raid, and finished off a large clematis. Relations were quite strained for a while after that.

Oh they can get a lot bigger still. This one from last winter is a Royal - 12 tines - they don’t counts sub points. He is not around here anymore - maybe leading the herd this year.

This one is overly casual, with me anyway. He might remember me from 9 months when I also gave him a carrot - I wonder…

Yes but be careful, they are very wary of humans and can flip into being aggressive under certain conditions.

That is very true. Don’t approach deer unless you know what you are doing. Especially males during the rutting season or if they are with their harem.

This is England, in the middle, Staffordshire. Red Deer are not native they were introduced here by the Normans about a 1000 years ago.

They also seem to get really nasty when they are losing the velvet on their antlers.

Yes it is dangerous unless you know what you are doing around deer. Do everything really slow. Don’t approach stags with dogs. Don’t approach them if they are with females. Don’t surprise them. Don’t corner them. Oh and if they lower those antlers at you, that is very bad - time to retreat.

They are so so about carrots, but for some reason during August they go mad for apples. I got woken up at 3:50am the other morning by one of them attacking the apple tree to shake the apples off.

He is still growing, hopefully he will grow up to be a Monarch with 16 or more tines.
