Teaching is more effective than scolding. Unfortunately it's also a lot more time-consuming and exhausting. A lot of people simply don't care about distant concepts like the imminent heat death of our planet. They need evidence of harm that affects their immediate present, like their jobs.

I don't know who needs to hear this but "Google is free" means nothing in today's world where the first page of any search is a bunch of SEO-optimized AI slop masquerading as news and telling you to eat rocks. SixKeys (@sixkeys.bsky.social) reply parent
I genuinely can't tell if the author never read the novel because while they seemingly recognize that this version hews closer to the novel, they also argue that's a *bad* thing because people are conditioned to expect adaptations that completely misrepresent the OG story, so it's not FAIR.

SixKeys (@sixkeys.bsky.social) reply parent
I dunno, I think the invention of nuclear weapons was always a bad idea and the only thing they've brought into the world is more fear. The moral panic about them has pretty much been proven true. Just because the tech continues to exist doesn't mean it should.
SixKeys (@sixkeys.bsky.social) reply parent

Equating certain words and concepts like emotion and vulnerability with weakness is deliberate. It's bullying. You bully people away from sharing their humanity by telling them they will essentially be ostracized. You make arts and education seem "dumb", and then you kill empathy.
SixKeys (@sixkeys.bsky.social) reply parent
Art is an expression of humanity, our shared experiences and emotions. So you kill that, too. You defund the arts to discourage people from proliferating shared experiences. Make art and literature seem unprofitable, unwise, "impulsive". Equate music and theater with (gasp!) "feminine", "gay".
SixKeys (@sixkeys.bsky.social)
And another thing! Defunding the arts and education is another direct result of trying to kill empathy. The more people know and understand about the world, the more empathy they have. So you demonize education. You mock it, use words like "nerdy" and "elitist" to make it seem undesirable.
SixKeys (@sixkeys.bsky.social) reply parent
This is, of course, the "socialist hellscape" the ultra-richâthe least empathetic classâkeep warning us about. They risk losing the most if empathy drives the people to demand equity. They can't kill absolutely everyone who has less than them. So they try to kill the whole concept of empathy.
SixKeys (@sixkeys.bsky.social) reply parent
This doesn't make those policies any better, of course, but at least they make more sense. If the underprivileged represent solidarity and understanding towards other humans, they have the potential to dream of better things. A world where everyone has some is better than one where some have none.
SixKeys (@sixkeys.bsky.social) reply parent
Fear and suspicion of your fellow man leads to isolation and stagnation. To being content with your lot and trusting authority to solve your problems for you. If killing empathy is the goal, even seemingly nonsensical economic policiesâsqueezing those who have nothing leftâstart to make sense.
SixKeys (@sixkeys.bsky.social)
Thinking about the Lindsay Ellis video and empathy. The underprivileged are consistently the class with the most empathy. Those who have little to give still give more to those who have none than do the ones who have it all. Killing empathy is the goal because empathy powers hope and change.

Are these things easy to do? No. But if you own a media/entertainment platform, you have a responsibility over the kind of content you produce. The behavior that you encourage, and that which you discourage. You can't fight authoritarianism using the same playbook. /thread
SixKeys (@sixkeys.bsky.social) reply parent
So how do we start to unravel the problem? Give people back their time. Allow them to slow down, to think, to listen. Discourage countdowns in debates, discourage audience reactions, discourage pump-up music. All things that force people into a fast-thinking, aggressive state of mind.
SixKeys (@sixkeys.bsky.social) reply parent
The 24-hour news cycle was invented to keep people in a state of constant uncertainty. Fear and uncertainty leads to engagement with whomever you perceive as the voice of reason. And the most reasonable person speaks with authority, certainty. That is what bite sized entertainment is built upon.
SixKeys (@sixkeys.bsky.social) reply parent
This is why "engagement" is the word of the day. We talk about attention spans as if it's people's own, innate fault, but capitalism has created a world where we genuinely have less time to think. And I think it's by design.
SixKeys (@sixkeys.bsky.social) reply parent
This leads to communication becoming a contest for who has the sharpest wit; the snappiest tweet that "eviscerates" one's opponent. The resulting public humiliation leads the opposing side to respond in kind. And now you no longer have a debate but a race for views.
SixKeys (@sixkeys.bsky.social) reply parent
Efficiently, in this case, meaning without all the "fluff" - words we use to soften our delivery, that open the ways for true empathy and listening. The Orwellian efficiency of "double plus ungood".
SixKeys (@sixkeys.bsky.social) reply parent
This leads to the rise of snappy, bite-sized content. The idea that your time is precious, so you need your news and entertainment delivered quickly, efficiently.
SixKeys (@sixkeys.bsky.social) reply parent
As poverty increases & people have to do increasingly more to hold on to their jobs - even get 2nd or 3rd jobs - their free time shrinks. Less time to unwind = wanting to spend that downtime productively. No more mindlessly watching TV for 3 hours - cut down the content to bare "essentials".
SixKeys (@sixkeys.bsky.social) reply parent
Back when the economy was more stable, TV and entertainment was geared more towards letting people unwind after a long day. Mindless, vapid entertainment meant to put your brain at ease. (Not saying it was necessarily *good*, but it was... stable.) A relaxed brain makes less hasty decisions.
SixKeys (@sixkeys.bsky.social)
The article stops just where I think it should start. What is behind the rise of these divisive formats? Can we predict where they're headed NOW instead of "ask me in 5 years"? I see a connection between people's shrinking free time and the rise of bite-sized, engagement bait entertainment. 1/?

I disagree that Superman should always be able to save everybody. To me it's more interesting to ask what choices a literal god would have to make if they were real. Supes being something of a stand-in for the Christian God seems to give filmmakers cold feet in seriously exploring that question.

Batman is easier to file away as morally grey; he's clearly disturbed. As a non-USian, it's not Superman's "boring" personality that turns me off but the glorification of his violent methods.
