I stand by Python for a hobby language, it's barrier to entry is super low and you can do some really fun stuff with it. I recommend a vanilla install. Non vanilla is for environment management and gets weird quickly.

It's an unconscious peer pressure thing. I don't mean to say that it is bad or good or anything else, but someone has a kid and that gets other people in the group thinking. It's pretty normal.
