I always admire Becca Rothfeld's nonfiction reviews. Here I particularly admire her persistence in reading the book. What a lede: www.washingtonpost.com/books/2025/0...

Sometimes an era is graced with a gift — a book that is not merely deficient in the usual ways, not merely insipid or uninspired, but epochal in its ineptitude. Amir Husain’s “The Cybernetic Society: How Humans and Machines Will Shape the Future Together” is dull, convoluted and written in the glib and ingratiating tones of a TED Talk. So far, so unexceptional. But it is also something more painful for its readers and more interesting for its critics: a monument to the vapidity and vulgarity of the culture that incubated it.

My favorite evergreen Molly Ivins quote: "I prefer someone who burns the flag and then wraps themselves up in the Constitution over someone who burns the Constitution and then wraps themselves up in the flag."

Molly Ivins, dressed in a sort of satin blouse with a neckthing that I'm going to call a scarf?. She's smiling with every cell in her body. Beaming radiantly the joy of being righteous and kind at the same time. Her eyes closed almost to a squint, and every pearly white on display. Gods bless you, Molly, you were a hell of a person.

On TikTok, a young woman shared a video earlier this month saying she went to a European Wax Center in Manhattan for a Brazilian wax, only to find her aesthetician wearing Meta Ray-Bans equipped with a camera. The batteries weren’t charged, the aesthetician claimed. But the experience rattled her. (A European Wax Center spokeswoman said the glasses were powered off at the time of service.) The popular post prompted others online to weigh in, saying that they resent living in a world where they never know if they’re being recorded. A stream of other critical videos about Meta’s glasses drew millions of views in recent days.

"That was my Neo moment in ‘The Matrix,’” she told Rogan on his show. “That was it. I was forever gone. Took the red pill.”

NYT screenshot Michaels describes her home in Jackson Hole, Wyo., which she bought in 2022, as her “main residence,” but it has been undergoing a lengthy renovation. In the meantime, for work as well as family — she co-parents two teenagers with her former partner Heidi Rhoades — she has continued to spend a lot of time in Los Angeles. (This is, she suggests, to her dismay. “LA and NYC are lost,” she tweeted in June. “Don’t bother fighting for them. Just run. And vote differently wherever you land.”) At her architecturally elaborate rental in Santa Monica, where she invited me after our lunch, she made me tea in her kitchen, sat cross-legged on her counter and, at one point, cradled her 18-year-old greyhound mix, Seven, like a baby. It was easy to imagine her as the dependable Southern California Democrat she had been just a few years ago, living in Malibu with a small farm’s worth of animals, appalled by Trump and occasionally tuning into Rogan for the chance to learn something about aliens or parallel universes. In 2020, not long after the Covid-19 pandemic shut down much of the country, Michaels was in fact listening to Rogan’s podcast while driving down the Pacific Coast Highway when his guest mentioned something that stuck with her: the possibility that the virus had leaked from a lab in Wuhan, China. Michaels was so struck by the idea that she pulled over and started Googling, a pivotal moment in her political transformation.

Israel continues killing journalists. It's hard to argue that this isn't a purposeful effort to hide their war crimes and the genocide from the world.

A word to the wise: This is broadly applicable in life, and on this site. Black women know when someone is condescending to us and it is deeply disrespectful. Especially when they're doing it for clout.

It was also an interesting act of community building. Lots of people made new friendly acquaintances and swapped contact info. We keep saying, "build community" but the scavenger hunt actually tried to do that.

A thing Zohran & his campaign have powerfully tapped into -- and that his scavenger hunt captures so perfectly -- is that a vast majority of the people who live here genuinely *love* New York City. We wouldn't stay here otherwise!

This scavenger hunt is so charming and smart and actively engaging. It gets New Yorkers out and about, exploring the city, talking to one another, taking advantage of public transportation and working toward a common cause. The levels! It’s just so great.

It's an embodied argument for pluralism, safe streets, clean air, public trust and engagement, being open and social with strangers, uniting in service of common goals, friendship! I wonder what Jane Jacobs would say were she alive to see this.

Do we see how much more effective this is at making the argument for what is good about cities by *showing it* rather than simply standing on an apple crate and proclaiming it?

There’s an essay to be written about how the “conservative” movement that’s spent the past 90 years trying to undo the New Deal has embraced the New Deal’a aesthetic as its propaganda genre of choice for promoting its regressive, anti-worker policies.

I agree -- getting into a discussion about "crime" is just lose-lose. I think the best way to frame this is about crushing local sovereignty, a continuation of Jim Crow efforts to ensure Black residents could not govern themselves as they saw fit.
