For a political party that is ostensibly in the business of winning elections, getting ahead of the public on "rights" has been a ticket to defeat for the last half-century.
Much of the discussion gets tied down in rights-talk, which has been a cancer on the Democratic Party since 1972. For all the talk about how rights are "inalienable" or "god-given", the fact has always been if the courts are unwilling to recognize a right, the public isn't going to lead the way.
I think the dilemma is if you end up with LBJ or Goldwater. MLK isnāt on the ballot. Even Lincolnās positions on slavery were not extremely progressive in 1860. Protecting trans rights will require proving that itās an issue Dems can win on. Otherwise, weāre in big trouble.
The whole point, obviously, is if they can't win, they can't do anything meaningful to support your rights; an "ally" who isn't in power isn't a useful ally.

I don't hate the homeless. We should build more housing, end NIMBY restrictions, and have more drug treatment facilities to deal with the underlying issues, but we should also be able to clear encampments.
Why exactly? If you think Biden and Trump are the same, then there really isn't much point wooing your vote. If you see Trump as an existential problem for our democracy, then vote accordingly.
