I’m standing up for truth. You made a false claim. Did murders in DC go up or down in 2025?
St. Hippo (@sthippo.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes it would, and a presidential signature. So it won’t happen till Dems win both houses and the presidency, sadly
St. Hippo (@sthippo.bsky.social)
I see many people asserting with 100% certainty that there will be no more fair elections in this country. This is an incredibly self-defeating attitude. The only way Trump can have such power is if people willingly give up their right to resist
St. Hippo (@sthippo.bsky.social) reply parent
Yup
St. Hippo (@sthippo.bsky.social) reply parent
The constitution doesn’t specify the borders of the district. They can be redrawn to cover just the main federal buildings and monuments. The rest of DC (where all the people actually live) can be admitted as a state
St. Hippo (@sthippo.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s not necessary to change the constitution. Congress can redraw the borders of the federal district to just the Capitol, White House, and Supreme Court, and admit the rest of DC as a state
St. Hippo (@sthippo.bsky.social) reply parent
Nope. Went way down in 2024, down even more so far in 2025.

PR has been hugely important to NYC. A pipeline of culture and politics and baseball players
St. Hippo (@sthippo.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m totally in favor of PR deciding for itself. I also think the US would be a better country if it had PR as a state if that’s what PR chooses.
St. Hippo (@sthippo.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes statehood for DC and Puerto Rico would be a small step towards a fair senate. For those who think this is somehow rigging the game, ask them if they know why there are two Dakotas instead of one

My anecdotal impression is that a lot of hedge fund owned big rental apartment buildings built in the last 10 or 15 years are no longer getting their asking rents because of (1) tech layoffs and (2) terrible reviews due to problems caused by shoddy construction and stingy maintenance

The Morality question: does consciousness entail moral responsibility? Does moral responsibility entail consciousness?
St. Hippo (@sthippo.bsky.social) reply parent
St. Hippo (@sthippo.bsky.social) reply parent
I had in mind conscious experience. Other aspects of consciousness are interesting as well, but for the differences to be noticeable wouldn’t they have to affect experience in some way?
St. Hippo (@sthippo.bsky.social) reply parent
Another question, related to Unity: do split brain patients have one consciousness or two?
St. Hippo (@sthippo.bsky.social) reply parent
That’s true. There are even subtle differences in the colors I see with each eye. But my intuition is that if I could climb into your head it would seem weird but not incomprehensible. But who knows?
St. Hippo (@sthippo.bsky.social) reply parent
One question that interests me but may well be impossible to answer: how different is consciousness for different people? We all seem to be talking about the same experience, but is it really the same?

Saying it will either rain tomorrow or it will not rain tomorrow doesn’t tell me anything about how things are, except to the extent that it goes beyond a tautology, for example by positing that there is such a thing as rain which sometimes happens
St. Hippo (@sthippo.bsky.social) reply parent
Is a fact that doesn’t tell you anything really a fact? Is it a fact that either it will rain tomorrow or it will not rain tomorrow or the moon will turn into green cheese? Then the number of facts is vastly infinite and the proportion that would contribute to our knowledge is an infitesimal
St. Hippo (@sthippo.bsky.social) reply parent

There is actually more human genetic diversity in Africa than outside it. It’s one bit of evidence that humans originated in Africa, since genetic diversity is generally greatest near the source.

Right, expect is too strong. We might even know our friend has their weak points and expect them not to do the right thing in some particular circumstance, but nevertheless we would be at least a little disappointed.
St. Hippo (@sthippo.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s not quid-pro-quo reciprocity, it’s reciprocity of values. We help our friends because it’s the right thing to do, and we expect/hope our friends to help us because it’s the right thing to do. It’s mutual advantage in practice, but we experience it as morality.

Which to me means it’s too early to rule out that a complete theory of consciousness won’t require some revision or extension of current scientific theories. I don’t think this is an anti-scientific view
St. Hippo (@sthippo.bsky.social) reply parent
I exaggerated, I admit. Still, the theories of consciousness I’m aware of that call themselves scientific, like Global Workspace Theory and Integrated Information Theory, are not so much scientific theories as philosophical theories that are broadly and loosely compatible with neuroscience.
St. Hippo (@sthippo.bsky.social) reply parent
Being anti-scientific is not as problematic when the available scientific theories of consciousness are still at the stage of humors and spontaneous generation.

There are many good reasons to oppose Cuomo besides me too. He is arrogant, petty, and happy to sacrifice any principle for his own benefit, as long as he can cover it up with sanctimonious blather and hard nosed political retribution. Every New Yorker who has been paying attention knows this
St. Hippo (@sthippo.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, that makes sense. Would it be fair to say that the a priori truths affect the agent’s behavior even if they don’t cause it?
St. Hippo (@sthippo.bsky.social) reply parent
And this knowledge that does not arise from causal contact with its subject matter nevertheless has causal power in the real world, for example when someone uses a priori rules of arithmetic to calculate the area of a wall to determine how much paint is needed

I think this is on the right track but I think a better definition would be creation of knowledge rather than processing it, with knowledge defined broadly as usable and effective information. So stimulus-response is not enough; the organism has to capture the information implied by the stimulus
