GDC has always been ass, and GDC now trying to further impose control outside moscone to strangle out side events is a sure sign that it's not going to get better. If you're a dev, this sheet is free and will have a higher impact than paying money to go to sf docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

I've said before that I have a low (but not zero) tolerance policy on AI trash in games. It sucks, but I won't let it ruin something that's 99% hand-made. THAT SAID, keep doing this and pressuring and embarassing studios that try to slip in that little bit of garbage. They might back down, like so!
sublexical (@sublexical.net) reply parent
Absolutely. I chuckled the first time I saw someone mention that limiting your google search to pre-2023 is like trying to find pre-war steel, but it has very quickly become a pretty real comparison. Everything is tainted now.
Casey Explosion (@caseyexplosion.bsky.social) reposted
Yeah, this especially an issue, I've brought up privately with some gamedev contacts, about some assets being used that were snuck in there without them knowing it was AI, and it causing them more hassle to remove it later. It's just putting extra work on people.
sublexical (@sublexical.net) reply parent
I'm a solo indie dev, and sourcing assets is quickly becoming ruined. Whether you're commissioning something or searching for it on an asset marketplace, it's impossible to know for sure if something was made with AI. People just lie when they're supposed to disclose it. It's a fucking nightmare.
sublexical (@sublexical.net) reply parent
Here's the source I use docs.google.com/spreadsheets... It's crowdsourced and kept up to date by people in the How to Market a Game discord. This event in particular wasn't on there, but lots of other lesser known events are on it.

Sorry, when I said that's interesting I was referring to your idea of an rgb-like representation of language
sublexical (@sublexical.net) reply parent
I also don't quite remember, but I think it might be at the syllabic level? Or is it still phonemic level but only occurs on syllabic phonemes?
sublexical (@sublexical.net) reply parent
Whoops haha yeah that's what I meant, thanks for pointing that out
sublexical (@sublexical.net) reply parent
I'm really interested in your idea of rgb representation of language. Would you be distinguishing between things like speech sound vs "language" like syntax and semantics? Or trying to unify their representation in some way?
sublexical (@sublexical.net) reply parent
That's really interesting! My understanding is that all speech sounds occur cross-culturally to varying degrees, and there aren't any documented occurrences of new speech sounds popping up. If I'm understanding what you're getting at.
sublexical (@sublexical.net) reply parent
If you're interested in finding good answers to questions like these, look into the sub-domain of linguistics called phonology. Decades and decades of science on exactly these types of questions.
sublexical (@sublexical.net) reply parent
*constricted airflow
sublexical (@sublexical.net) reply parent
The distinction you're noticing is between obstruent and sonorant sounds. Obstruents are sounds with completely or mostly constructed airflow, and sonorants have completely or mostly unrestricted airflow (including nasal airflow). All vowels are obstruents, but only some consonants are.

I’m seeing a lot of soft takes from industry mutuals at the moment that we shouldn’t be so hard on those who use generative AI because it’s becoming harder and harder to resist. Wrong. Betraying your ethics (and your peers) because ‘everyone else is doing it’ does not suddenly make it acceptable.

I think games like Cult of the Lamb and Moonlighter are carrying the Actraiser torch. They might not be exactly the same, but they're in the same vein of splitting the gameplay so one half is focused on action and the other on management
