I am discovering, at 53 years old, that I suck at receiving constructive criticism.

I wish I had any debate skills to speak of, but even if I did, none of the people attending an event like this are likely to be swayed by logic.

Still, that head-on shot is awesome.

It's so much harder to plan where the light will be with aircraft in flight. With trains it's just, "I'm on the south side of the tracks." Boom. Good light. Alas, airplanes aren't that cooperative.

A great DM learns how to say "yes," and then allow the dice to take the players to a hell beyond their wildest nightmares.

This is a great idea for capturing references for modeling neighborhoods. So often I see modelers just plop buildings down on top of some ground foam and leave it at that.
Sudro Brown II (@sudro2.bsky.social) reply parent
Only if you decorate it with giant pennies and T-Rex robots. Otherwise it's just a sparkling grotto.

I work with sailors and naval officers daily. The officers I mostly trust to adhere to the Constitution; hard to say about the sailors. They're mostly taught to get the job done.
Sudro Brown II (@sudro2.bsky.social) reply parent
But can they recognize illegal orders? Can we trust that people drilled to follow orders can muster the fortitude to refuse an order if they determine it's illegal?
Sudro Brown II (@sudro2.bsky.social) reply parent
Exactly. Fox basically convinced half of the population that she was the literal devil.

When she first ran for the Dem nom in 2008, I tried to tell enthusiastic friends how unhinged the right was in their hatred of her, how it would drive votes for a Repub candidate. I lost that argument in 2016 and look where it got us. We need real progr leadership from the Dems, not more centrism.

The Internet has been down in my office since before I arrived today, but because telework must be approved at the highest levels of DoD, we're all sitting here twiddling our thumbs. What a fucking waste. Are we great again yet?

Chaotic good doesn't mean that you've broken laws, just that you prioritize people's well being over adherence to law. It's a willingness to break the law if necessary to do the ethically right thing. And "AG" are the initials of the person behind the MSW account.

And more than two hours late, our plane is finally taxiing. This being LAX, we could still be 30 minutes on the ground to the runway...

Ballasting complete! I'm hoping that the two colors I used on the main lines dry to a more common color (I ran out of the darker stuff about halfway through), but if not, I'll weather it down later. #modeltrains

John Carpenter's The Thing. It came out in 1982 and I saw it (or the beginning anyway) on HBO or Showtime soon after. One of the neighborhood kids made a minor event for us all to watch it. The dog sent me running my 10-year-old ass home. In 40-plus years, I've never tried to watch it again.
Sudro Brown II (@sudro2.bsky.social)
I've been hard at work on my model railroad club's traveling layout in prep for the Ventura County Fair, our signature event. The yard on the layout, which was previously barely functional, has been entirely redone, new track, switches, and switch machines. Hope I can ballast it before the show.
Sudro Brown II (@sudro2.bsky.social) reply parent
I could maybe--maybe--see this getting traction with railfans more interested in the full scale than models, but why would modelers be at all interested in these? We have enough unbuilt kits cluttering up our workspaces.
Sudro Brown II (@sudro2.bsky.social) reply parent
Fuck. Yes. And the live version on Stage is electrifying.
Sudro Brown II (@sudro2.bsky.social) reply parent
Hell, we couldn't even keep a grip on widespread teleworking, why should we expect even further movement in the right direction?

Basically, just look at the parts of the country that have lost manufacturing jobs. Hollowed out wastelands populated by desperately poor people scratching at the margins of society, radicalized against their own interests by racist media outlets in the pay of the elites. Walmart Nation.

Burbank Airport in the San Fernando Valley is the LAX alternative that's like this. Easy parking, fast security, chill vibe. Most gates (if not all) are boarded by staircase rather than jetway and I always feel like I'm in a 1950s movie whenever I fly out of there.

I've found a great way to get the ballast off the ties is to gently tap the rails with the handle of the brush. The ballast just hops off the ties into the gaps between. Ballasting: totally worth doing, even if it's a giant pain in the ass to do.

A friend of mine lived next to him in Park Slope 20 years ago or so. We didn't know until I was helping her move out and he was seeing his wife and kids off on a trip. We're both hanging out on this Brooklyn sidewalk, but it didn't seem like the time to say, "love your work!"

Multiple large accounts today have posted “the girls are fighting” or something similar. Carol nails it. That’s not what’s happened. These are dysregulated megalomaniacs, and it’s insulting to compare girls to them. Also, using girls as an insult is misogynistic. Please stop doing that!

This right here (not PoC or female characters having actual roles) is my problem with the sequels. The storytelling seems to have been entirely in Abrams' head and not on the screen. No sense of who or what the First Order is. Two lines in an opening crawl could have fixed this.

COVID really proved that we can get the work done from home, but bosses just can't stand to relinquish that control. A 4-day work week is another aspect of this phenomenon.
Sudro Brown II (@sudro2.bsky.social) reply parent
Remote work is just as productive as office work, but bosses are still so entrenched to the idea that if they can't see their employees, the employees aren't working. When DoD did their "Return to Office" earlier this year, the bosses were the biggest cheerleaders, despite the drop in morale.

Me too. I never felt like SW fit into the D20 mold and somehow missed the WEG version. The FFG system has become my favorite RPG system overall and the sheer volume of options available for the SW game is like candy to an RPG collector like me. I've played almost every week for five years.

I think we make a minor mistake when we believe that identity has only just become central to the division. I remember being in high school in the mid-'80s, in the car with my mom, and she commented on one of my visibly punk classmates: "she's just doing it for attention."
