Lol yeah, it's a fair cop. Also the media/govt amplifying barely extant anti immigration protests. I think I'd file those under "our own issues" though, rather than stemming directly from anti intellectualism - but the lines are definitely blurred.

It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
Which isn't really surprising. I mean, nobody expect to glean the full nuance of an entire think piece from the headline or opening precis para. But if that's all you have to go on then yes, I understand that that's all you have to go on.
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
They're an advert though. You're then meant to read the article and it's literally about teen boys etc. I don't think it's so much an underlying presumption as just benefiting from the context of the article If you've read it you'll understand. If not, then you may well not.
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
I think it's perhaps more not being wise to the fact that a single post of three can go viral and in doing so lose vital context. Which, in fairness, is exactly the same mistake I made - assuming three posts I had read as a triptych would always be read as such and so the context of each preserved.
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
Well because that's what the article is about (or, more specifically, to teenage boys experiences within that sphere). But as I say, I take the point that you wouldn't know that unless you'd read the threaded skeet with the link to it, actually clicked on it and read it.
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
Cool cool, ok - agreed entirely. I'm grateful for your taking the time to explain. Have a good evening :)
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't quite follow this (but again, I absolutely agree with what you said originally). But yeah, I understand the "I hadn't seen the first skeet" thing; that makes a lot more sense. I thought that's what you had reply quoted; if I'm wrong on that then I apologise for the confusion.
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
And yet here we both are, I guess. No, I just didn't understand the response, because it seemed to completely miss the thrust of the article and yet the politics seemed to overlap. Turns out they hadn't read the article so that makes sense now. Phew!
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
It's a three skeet thread, the first of which links to the article, and the other two fine a brief precis of it. I see where you're coming from re "I was specifically referring to skeet 2" but it seems odd to excise context. (Fwiw I absolutely agree with your main point)
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean, it's literally a post advertising this week's column on a journalist's substack. It seems a bit weird to pass negative judgment without bothering to check whether the impression you got from a (necessarily) tiny precis was actually what he was saying.
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
The original skeet is a link to an article he wrote, in which it's very clear that the "silence" he's talking about is solely relating to advice on how to get laid being offered to hormonal teen boys. I genuinely don't know how anyone who has read the article it links could interpret it wider.
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh come on lol. It's abundantly clear from the article that the "silence" referred to is limited to advice to hormonal teen boys on how to get laid. It's a willful misreading to ignore the context and pretend it's saying something it absolutely isn't.
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
I think I was agreeing with most of what you said, and - given that - trying to work out which bit of the article you disagreed with! It's cool, have a good evening :)
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm not quite sure what you mean by that, sorry. "They are completely silent on the subject of how to get laid" and "they aren't offering advice on how to get laid" seems broadly equivalent to me. Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're saying.
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
That's where it ends, sure. It's not where it starts though. The bait for the fresh meat is almost always how to get laid - which is the point of the article. It's not about dealing with those who are already in the cult, it's about trying to counter the siren call of it in the first place.
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
Did you read the article? He's talking about the fact that the vast majority of "advice" on how to get laid that's pitched at horny teen boys comes from the manosphere, and how that can be addressed. That doesn't seem very contentious to me?
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
I think that's a complete misreading - it's not about those already in the right wing sex grievance incel brigade, it's about the pathway into it from normal horny teen wondering how to get laid. And how the "advice" out there is overwhelmingly from the right/manosphere.
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
That's an interesting take. You don't think someone like Andrew Tate is offering teen boys "if you do x and y then you'll get to fuck women"?

It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
I think that's kinda the point of the article, isn't it? But that only the right/manosphere explicitly offer (bullshit, awful) "solutions".
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
Anyway, I've wanged on enough and taken up enough of your time. Thanks for replying and explaining. Have a lovely evening or whatever time it is in your bit of the world :)
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
Agree entirely here, too! Fwiw the author always comes out to bat - very eloquently - for LGBTQ, immigrants, ND, the poor etc. Compassion and understanding of struggle underpins everything he writes. I suspect my familiarity with his output lends a context that may not be shared.
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
Haha yeah I'm also in this skeet :) But I don't think he's equating actual success with being a ticket to Sexville. More that just trying to be better at life - however that looks and to whatever result - will be far more likely to get you a partner. Which is, I think, kinda what you said too :)
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
Maybe a cultural thing but I'm not reading that as masculine coded. Not overtly feminine either, though, sure. But I felt that was maybe the point - you can be attractively competent with anything. Slightly simplistic, maybe, but - in the context of 16yos looking for a quick fix - relevant?
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
No I absolutely accept that, and I'm familiar with the (bizarre, to my mind, but here we are) "logic" underpinning it all. We're absolutely in agreement on that. They're very much two sides of the same coin.
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
Don't quite follow, sorry. If you're equating the alt-right manosphere and the right generally then yeah, I agree entirely. Just acknowledging that (if you're US based) the right has a veneer of puritanism that (on the face of it) sits oddly with "do x to get laid".
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
As a 52 year old - no, obviously not. But as a 16yo? I wanted to get laid and didn't know how. A "quick fix" could have been beguiling. I think that's an implicit point in the article - as you grow up and live experiences you learn and move away from such singular views.
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
("right" in this context being the alt-right manosphere, rather than the puritanical US right, which now I think about it might be some of the confusion re this article from across the pond?)
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
Sure, the left talk about and celebrate sex all the time, esp Vs the right, I think that's a given. But the thrust of the article is that they're aren't talking about *how* to get laid in a way that engages with a teen audience and their desires, fears, needs etc. Which the right very much are.
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
This is an odd take in the context of the article. It literally goes out of its way to say that the author is crap at every male coded skill and that there are plenty of other ways to be competent that aren't those. "Masculine" in the quoted context = "attractive to women" I think.
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
...and isn't this the message of the piece? Basically - if you want to get laid: be you, recognise you aren't for everyone, listen, work on yourself, develop yourself - and ultimately that setting sex as your only goal in life diminishes you and the sex you get?
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
I think the problem being addressed isn't the left being sex averse etc, more that to a teen boy asking the question "how do I get laid" there is a vast ecosystem of awfulness that claims to have a definitive answer, but no real counterpoint to that being offered.
It'sa me, Rocko. (@suntoryboss.bsky.social) reply parent
It's a great bit of writing and hits all of the points correctly. It's absolutely correct in every way. That shouldn't need saying but it's 2025 and the internet. So I just wanted to tip the hat and hopefully offset a smidgen of the inevitable manosphere backlash.
