I also challenge that the genre is largely for kids. When you give independent people freedom to create their own superhero world & stories, they tend not to be aimed at little kids. There’s nothing inherently kiddish about characters with powers fighting. That’s most fantasy or sci-fi.
Not sure how “affecting the world with great power” is a “juvenile” fantasy. Anyways, the reason Superheroes don’t fundamentally improve the world is probably because that would make the world too different from ours, and thus ruin the fantasy of BEING a superhero (in our own world)
