One of the foreign students studying at Harvard is Cleo Carney, the eldest daughter of Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney. How will Donald Trump handle this? She is in Cambridge now, instructed by Harvard faculty/staff to stay. This situation is taking place at this same time trade talks. Yikes!

KARL: Is a trade deficit subsidizing Canada? RAND PAUL: No. They're really not related at all. What happens if we trade with another country because they have less expensive goods is we become richer. You also have more money you can spend.

sweeprrr.bsky.social (@sweeprrr.bsky.social)
We need new markets, reliable ones, to sell goods we produce and alternative markets from whom we buy. And we need to stop discounting the crude oil we sell American customers. An ungrateful US administration needs to learn the facts regarding trade balances. And it can pay more for OPEC crude oil.
sweeprrr.bsky.social (@sweeprrr.bsky.social)
After weaknesses in the US supply chain were revealed by COVID, adjustments were put in place to address product sectors with ‘made at home’ deficiencies. Canada thanks President Trump for the wake up call. Our country over time has gotten too comfortable in its trade dealings with the USA. 1/2

sweeprrr.bsky.social (@sweeprrr.bsky.social) reply parent
DJT is really attempting to substitute deception for reality … his fundamental modus operandi. He’s in search of magic pills and solutions because, respectfully, he lacks the vision if not the competence to be in charge. And to cover up his human foibles, he lashes out and bullies. Sad really.

Donald Trump spews so much fiction he should have been a fiction novelist. But he’d have to get beyond a storyline concept. His attack on Canada with his untruths reveals he’s largely full of fiction. His claim to his MAGA base that USA vs Canada trade favours Canada by $250B is 6-fold exaggeration.
sweeprrr.bsky.social (@sweeprrr.bsky.social) reply parent
An accurate assessment. Why would Canadians want to regress their quality of life like that? Greedy billionaires are greedy everywhere … but American billionaire greed is off the rails. It underlies the high costs of US healthcare and firearms’ deaths.

Canada will not bend the knee. Canada will engage in fact-based discussion. And serious negotiations must be underpinned by truth. To be relevant. And fruitful to both sides. That’s the real art of a deal. Not bravado. Not bluster. Not bullshit! 4/4
sweeprrr.bsky.social (@sweeprrr.bsky.social)
And if US-based entities stopped buying Canadian crude oil (remember his “drill, baby, drill” promise), the USA would be in a trade surplus position. So get crude oil elsewhere. Canada could/would sell its crude elsewhere. Business is business. 3/4
sweeprrr.bsky.social (@sweeprrr.bsky.social)
His number is in error and so is his reference to it as a ‘subsidy’. Facts show the US is in a trade deficit position … estimated to land at about $45B for 2024, and was $40.6B in 2023. This is based on a total trade of approximately $1 trillion dollars. So 4.5% currently in Canada’s favour. 2/4
sweeprrr.bsky.social (@sweeprrr.bsky.social)
Donald Trump has a strange deal-making/negotiation approach regarding imposition of tariffs on Canadian commodities. It’s not a fact-based strategy. Appears it’s an approach based on bluster. His stated rationale (aka gross exaggeration) is that the USA is subsiding Canada in excess of $200B. 1/4
sweeprrr.bsky.social (@sweeprrr.bsky.social)
Just a thought. Canada’s current inflation rate is at 1.8%, one of the lowest in the world. Perhaps Trump’s lust for Canada is related to his lack of confidence in being able to lower US inflation … currently at 2.9% and likely on an upward trajectory in light of his lack of economic savy.
sweeprrr.bsky.social (@sweeprrr.bsky.social)
Says if we bend the knee, he’ll not impose his TARIFFS. So he’ll seemingly take control of our resources. And will we have no say as he pillages … things like lumber, cars, food products, oil, natural gas, minerals, aluminum … things he claims the US doesn’t really need from us. No thanks!
sweeprrr.bsky.social (@sweeprrr.bsky.social)
And he’s offering better healthcare coverage. Better than the universal healthcare coverage that we now have!! Wow! That’s one hell of a promise! Problem is I don’t believe him. And I would not trust him, even if he put that in writing. Seems he has a credibility problem. 2/3
sweeprrr.bsky.social (@sweeprrr.bsky.social)
“I would love to see Canada be the 51st state. Canadian citizens would get a very big tax cut. They’d have much better health coverage.” Words today (Jan 24/25) espoused by Donald J Trump. I’m laughing! Tax cut! The one US billionaires are getting? Or the one middle class will really get? 1/2

Beyond that, the more radically right Poilievre appears in the pending spring of 2024 election, his opportunity to win will decline. Canada typically prefers its politics to be centrist. His most likely opponent will be a new face for the Liberal Party, Mark Carney, a career banker with credibility.
sweeprrr.bsky.social (@sweeprrr.bsky.social) reply parent
Whether or not the Canadian electorate votes in its right-leaning party currently under the stewardship of Pierre Poilievre, universal healthcare is safe, sound and far less expensive than the insane approach to healthcare in the USA. Even Poilievre wouldn’t risk political suicide. /1

@adamkinzinger.bsky.social Adam: Interested in your current beliefs regarding economic policy. Which is more effective for growing the US economy — a trickle-down approach with tax policies benefiting the wealthy, or tax policies targeted at lowering taxes of middle and lower class Americans? Why?

Just a thought. Perhaps defendant Trump should only receive a suspended sentence if he fully and completely, without any future denial, admits under oath that he is guilty as charged and as found via a jury of American citizens. Not to do so, or to deny in the future, would result in incarceration.
