My understanding is that without a warrant, it is legal to deny entry to one's house or other privately owned space. But I am not a lawyer.
Tim Corica (@tcorica.bsky.social) reply parent
Am I correct in thinking that an ICE agent w/out a warrant (judicial or admin) may be prevented, legally, from entering a private community? I'm thinking, in particular, of "gated" communities that are posted as "private", and a case in which ICE agents appear at the gatehouse and ask for entrance.

This problem "rhymes" with an old favorite. A standard chess board has had two diagonally opposite corner squares removed. Can the remaining 62 squares of the board board be covered with 31 rectangular dominoes, each of which covers exactly two squares? 1/2

This is the updated "buses sent by Soros" trope. I don't allow myself much optimism these days, but it's hard to see this claim working. The NG folks from Ohio, etc. can see with their own eyes who the protesters are, and will know that they are not being welcomed by the people who live in DC.

Our AP Stats folks, though, liked the nSpire, and kept requiring them. So that the AP Stats tail didn't wag the dog, we ended up investing in a classroom set just for AP Stats, and letting kids use 84s, Desmos on a SmartPhone, etc. elsewhere. 2/2
Tim Corica (@tcorica.bsky.social) reply parent
Full disclosure: I was a Math dept. chair who was persuaded that the nSpire (which, at the time, wasn't much more costly than a new 84) would open up opportunities for cool classroom experiences, and I was part of requiring it. A few Ts did a few things, but not much. It was a poor decision. 1/2
Tim Corica (@tcorica.bsky.social) reply parent
By and large, teachers *in general* haven't invested in the nSpire learning curve. Unless a school has got one in the hands of every student and is working to take advantage of its features, an nSpire will just be a hard-to-use version of an 84. Choose 84 if you must have a handheld. IMHO

As an introductory exercise, I found it useful to consider the problem of finding the intersection of the circle with radius P and center at (P,0) with the circle of radius Q and center at (0,Q). E.g., show that the POI lies on y=(P/Q)x. Tons of approaches possible, inversion being one. 3/3
Tim Corica (@tcorica.bsky.social) reply parent
I've found a reasonably nice solution to this using inversion. Because the answer is a weird looking fraction, I'm wondering if perhaps there actually isn't a pretty geometric solution to this pretty problem! 2/3
Tim Corica (@tcorica.bsky.social) reply parent
I saw the responses suggesting "inversion" - i.e. recasting the problem by writing equations r= and then rewriting them as r'=1/r=. I've still managed to avoid looking inversion up š, but I've done some thinking and experimenting with it - it's a surprising and cool technique. 1/3
Tim Corica (@tcorica.bsky.social) reply parent
Agreed. When I taught BC Calculus, I made it a policy not to use "AP questions" or refer to the AP at all until March. No "when they grade your FRQ....", etc. We thus spent the bulk of the year thinking about Calculus, not "BC Calculus". It worked fine. I did the same thing in teaching AP CS, btw.
Tim Corica (@tcorica.bsky.social) reply parent
P.S. I flipped the image across the horizontal so that the given circles had centered on an axis, making it easier to write the polar equations in terms of r. @samjshah.bsky.social

So, I've captured everything in a Desmos sheet EXCEPT how to take the final circle and un-invert it to find the uninverted center and radius. Any hints? I'm avoiding "reading up" on inversion, but I will if needed! www.desmos.com/calculator/r...
Tim Corica (@tcorica.bsky.social) reply parent
Most of this seems pretty straightforward, so I'm guessing that the trick is finding the radius of the circle that is tangent to three circular arcs. Hm.....

I vote for "of course". Each of these arcs is formed by a diagonal of the pentagon as it is rotated about one of the corners of the equilaterial triangle. From what I recall, that's precisely how one makes a Reuleaux triangle. It's interesting that it takes a few times around for this to emerge.

x^2 < 1 is not a system, it's a quadratic inequality. It's solution set can be given as a system, { x>-1, x < 1}. These are all questions of definition, not of math, so there's no right/wrong. But I think it bends the conventional understanding of the word "system" to call it a system.
Tim Corica (@tcorica.bsky.social) reply parent
(IMO) I wouldn't call any of these a "system". I would call them absolute value inequalities or abs value equation. Each is an absolute value inequality/equality. Your 1st example can be *rewritten as* a system of inequalities. I reserve "system" for a set of statements all of which must be true.
Tim Corica (@tcorica.bsky.social) reply parent
I agree, the keyword being "all", which implies "and".
Tim Corica (@tcorica.bsky.social) reply parent
I think a "system of equations" (or inequalities) is a set of equations (or inequalities) that *all* must be true, i.e., they are conjoined with "and". These two inequalities are combined with "or" operators, so I wouldn't call it a "system".
