My understanding is that without a warrant, it is legal to deny entry to one's house or other privately owned space. But I am not a lawyer.

Am I correct in thinking that an ICE agent w/out a warrant (judicial or admin) may be prevented, legally, from entering a private community? I'm thinking, in particular, of "gated" communities that are posted as "private", and a case in which ICE agents appear at the gatehouse and ask for entrance.

In 2001, I was lead counsel on a class action case on behalf of so-called "comfort women"--sex slaves who were kidnapped from grade schools and town squares across southeast Asia, ranked by race, and forced to service up to forty Japanese soldiers a day in concentration camps--and this made me cry.

Suppose a black square and a white square are each chosen randomly. What is the probability that it will be possible to cover the remaining squares with dominoes? What about (2n)x(2n) boards? 2n x m boards? So many extensions!

This problem "rhymes" with an old favorite. A standard chess board has had two diagonally opposite corner squares removed. Can the remaining 62 squares of the board board be covered with 31 rectangular dominoes, each of which covers exactly two squares? 1/2

This is the updated "buses sent by Soros" trope. I don't allow myself much optimism these days, but it's hard to see this claim working. The NG folks from Ohio, etc. can see with their own eyes who the protesters are, and will know that they are not being welcomed by the people who live in DC.

Our AP Stats folks, though, liked the nSpire, and kept requiring them. So that the AP Stats tail didn't wag the dog, we ended up investing in a classroom set just for AP Stats, and letting kids use 84s, Desmos on a SmartPhone, etc. elsewhere. 2/2

By and large, teachers *in general* haven't invested in the nSpire learning curve. Unless a school has got one in the hands of every student and is working to take advantage of its features, an nSpire will just be a hard-to-use version of an 84. Choose 84 if you must have a handheld. IMHO

As an introductory exercise, I found it useful to consider the problem of finding the intersection of the circle with radius P and center at (P,0) with the circle of radius Q and center at (0,Q). E.g., show that the POI lies on y=(P/Q)x. Tons of approaches possible, inversion being one. 3/3

I've found a reasonably nice solution to this using inversion. Because the answer is a weird looking fraction, I'm wondering if perhaps there actually isn't a pretty geometric solution to this pretty problem! 2/3

Profile picture Tim Corica (@tcorica.bsky.social) reply parent

I saw the responses suggesting "inversion" - i.e. recasting the problem by writing equations r= and then rewriting them as r'=1/r=. I've still managed to avoid looking inversion up šŸ™‚, but I've done some thinking and experimenting with it - it's a surprising and cool technique. 1/3

Agreed. When I taught BC Calculus, I made it a policy not to use "AP questions" or refer to the AP at all until March. No "when they grade your FRQ....", etc. We thus spent the bulk of the year thinking about Calculus, not "BC Calculus". It worked fine. I did the same thing in teaching AP CS, btw.

I vote for "of course". Each of these arcs is formed by a diagonal of the pentagon as it is rotated about one of the corners of the equilaterial triangle. From what I recall, that's precisely how one makes a Reuleaux triangle. It's interesting that it takes a few times around for this to emerge.

x^2 < 1 is not a system, it's a quadratic inequality. It's solution set can be given as a system, { x>-1, x < 1}. These are all questions of definition, not of math, so there's no right/wrong. But I think it bends the conventional understanding of the word "system" to call it a system.

2/7/2025, 8:48:03 PM | 0 0 | View on Bluesky | view

Profile picture Tim Corica (@tcorica.bsky.social) reply parent

(IMO) I wouldn't call any of these a "system". I would call them absolute value inequalities or abs value equation. Each is an absolute value inequality/equality. Your 1st example can be *rewritten as* a system of inequalities. I reserve "system" for a set of statements all of which must be true.

I think a "system of equations" (or inequalities) is a set of equations (or inequalities) that *all* must be true, i.e., they are conjoined with "and". These two inequalities are combined with "or" operators, so I wouldn't call it a "system".

Federal agents used explosives to enter a U.S. citizen’s home and entered — guns drawn — on a baby, a 6-year-old, and their mother. She believes it’s because her boyfriend attended an ICE protest where he accidentally hit a cop car (and was released by cops). www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/h...

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson’s dissent hits the target. She is reminding us of the stakes in this case. And she is spot on. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24p...

He heard that there were "asylum seekers" coming to the U.S. who were, you know, seeking asylums. He 100% thinks this bc no one in his circle is willing to correct him or, if they are, the message can't penetrate his so-called "mind".

Reminder that "no tax on SS" is not in the Big Baloney Bill, even though he's talking about it. www.kiplinger.com/taxes/no-soc...

Wow. There's no daylight between Bove's "F*** off!" to the courts annd Vought's "We won't need to follow the law."

...or clever applications of the latest technology tools. This is true from Pre-K to Senior year, from coloring between the lines to mastering Stokes' Law!

Great! (...although I might have preferred labels to folders). Also, you can now go into Desmos and choose the tool you want (Geo, 3D, etc.) rather than having to specify different URLs. #iteachmath #mtbos

Sorry - the OP (understandably) left out part of the question, so there was no equation to be rearranged. I'm in the U.S. so the talk about U.K. exams often fascinates, but sometimes confuses me!

The problem doesn't provide a function, so it's like saying "Differentiate xy" which must have a y' in the answer, assuming we are diffentiating wrt x.

Opposing viewpoint: LinkedIn is the way I keep track of the careers and accomplishments of my former students, and how I sometimes can connect young alums with more senior ones to help them. I love seeing what they are up to! I just try to ignore the nonsense.

You, @ahestenes.bsky.social seem experienced, creative, and eager to learn (I read your bio šŸ˜‰). What books/PD made a difference for you? Maybe they would most benefit from reading/discussing a book along with you? Book + conversation >> book alone. 2/2

True to form :), I'd probably answer the question with questions! Are they fascinated with math but new to teachinng? Do they have experience working with kids but not with math? What level? Are they nervous about the classroom? Do they need to be freed from trad math thinking? 1/2

Also would add "Between the Folds" about the connection between math and art in Origami. It pays tribute to (and interviews) some amazing traditional Origami artists as well as contemporary mathematicians. And we use The Proof (Nova) on Wiles/Fermat every year.
