Husband found Frank like this and came and handed me my stethoscope to go check for proof of life. We went in the room and I clapped , Frank turned his head & opened his eyes . I said yep he's alive. And hung up the stethoscope. He was so mad.

There are so many people in this country who cannot afford to just drop everything for a weekend and go to a foreign country to pay out-of-pocket for medical treatment, or who are afraid to leave the country because they aren't citizens or aren't white and thus fear re-entry through US customs. 2/

The blame here is largely to be placed on Cubic, which is the vendor selected by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (the multi-county agency responsible for coordination between transit agencies). Cubic has been a horrible partner since original Clipper and now Clipper 2.0 testing.

That’s so dumb, you should be able to have different kinds of cards on the same account. That makes managing a family’s worth of cards that much harder. 🙄

This delay was 24h minimum for vehicle-mounted readers when the system was implemented, because the original readers updated via WiFi when the vehicle was at the depot, which is usually at the end of the service day. This is also why it used to take 1+ days to see your bus taps in your Clipper acct

Profile picture Ryan (@teshiron.bsky.social) reply parent

If you can think of a way to allow deliberate multiple taps without allowing mistaken taps or requiring a station agent to come over and help, I’d love to hear it (and so would BART, I expect).

21/8/2025, 3:58:17 PM | 0 0 | View on Bluesky | view

Profile picture Ryan (@teshiron.bsky.social) reply parent

I don’t disagree that it causes awkward problems at the fare gates, and may discourage some people/families from riding. System-wide though, the problems that allowing multiple taps would cause would be a much bigger headache for BART as a whole, because the vast majority of riders are alone.

Really? I’ve visited a few cities in the US that use prepaid cards and have run into similar limitations. If you can think of any examples, I’d love to look into how they do it so I can suggest similar methods to Muni while they’re struggling with the Clipper vendor Cubic who’s stuck in 2002.

Unfortunately, this kind of constant, reliable mobile connection was just not even a remote possibility when the system was designed in ~2002. Even today, data reception challenges underground or in remote areas makes the idea of a fully server-side system problematic.

21/8/2025, 3:48:27 PM | 0 0 | View on Bluesky | view

Profile picture Ryan (@teshiron.bsky.social) reply parent

If they had implemented the card as just a secure identifier, à la credit cards, and kept the balance authority on a server, then such things would be instant. This would require every reader (on every bus and train in the Bay Area) to have a constant reliable data connection to validate every card

21/8/2025, 3:43:43 PM | 0 0 | View on Bluesky | view

Profile picture Ryan (@teshiron.bsky.social) reply parent

Specifically, because the chip in the card itself is authoritative re: its balance, any kind of card-not-present transaction (like adding money online or by phone) *requires* a communication delay to disseminate the “when you see this card, tell it to add $20” transaction to readers and fare gates.

Today’s challenge: resisting the urge to over-explain to internet randos that the most annoying traits of the Clipper Card system stem from the choice to implement the cards as self-authoritative finite state machines.

If you could tap again to charge 2nd fare, the error rate would be astronomical: “I didn’t hear the beep so I did it again”, “I don’t know how to tap so I do a weird jerky motion and tapped twice” etc. Also, it would mean there would be no way to allow you to transfer for free to another vehicle.

21/8/2025, 3:08:29 PM | 1 0 | View on Bluesky | view

Profile picture Ryan (@teshiron.bsky.social) reply parent

The “why” is almost entirely to prevent double charges (at all agencies), but also to allow the free transfer process to work (at agencies like Muni with unlimited transfers within a set time). The only reasonable way to allow multiple charges on one card would require manual intervention by agent.

Profile picture Ryan (@teshiron.bsky.social) reply parent

If you plan to take BART more than once, you should absolutely get a Clipper card for each family member, but this a reasonable workaround for tourists and infrequent riders. Getting a physical card for each person at the machine costs $3+adult fare and -2 min per person. If you have a group of 6…

Families that live locally should already have youth Clipper cards for their children, especially since most (all?) transit agencies offer a youth discount — 50% off BART. “Unreasonably difficult” applies to visitors and those who have failed to plan.

I don’t think that’s quite it. It’s more that these types of people want to have control over the way LGBTQ people are portrayed to their children; that is, they want control of the narrative their children see and hear. They don’t want their kids to see gay or trans people as “normal”.

What I don’t get is bags of dog poo that are littered/left behind on the sidewalk or street. You did more than half the work by picking it up in the first place, just bin it!

"I cast an affirmative vote to prevent an impeachment inquiry into Donald J. Trump" is the kind of thing you really want to spend primary season explaining to enraged Democratic voters, in my opinion

The KittySpout works well for our kitty, it’s all dishwasher safe (except the pump) and does a faucet-like stream.
