We were optimistic about how social media would change society when in hindsight skepticism and discretion could have helped us. We have a model for how AI will be weaponized. We don't have certainty, but also it's not responsible to assume it will be a net positive without evidence that's likely.
You're right, optimism vs. pessimism underpin the debate. If you think things are going well and people are in practice empowered while I think the opposite, it's unlikely either of us will be convinced we're wrong.

The forces working to use it against us have more money and power and will. AI alone is cool, but it's the intersection of AI and 2020s era capitalism and crumbling institutions that's the problem.
AI will be a strong force multiplier for all sort of enshittification and predation, but you're right, all those things existed before. It's just not a good time for there to be more tools that can be used against us.

I don't think it's Helena. It would feel lazy for the writers to pull the same trick twice, and they've been better than that so far. Also, Mark's choice was the emotional climax of the episode/season so I think they'd want to let it stand rather than subvert it with a plot twist.
