If anyone's wondering how the market ever got this stupid it's probably because we created an economic system where the people at the top can't actually fail no matter how many bad decisions they make.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
Conservatives have spent my entire lifetime and beyond claiming they want a small government that leaves people alone. It was always a lie and I'm already mad knowing that someday they're gonna go back to lying about that and some people will believe them.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
One of the big reasons there was such a strong push to reopen before the vaccine rollout was specifically that certain people saw it as an opening to attack teachers' unions and try to get the public on their side to crush them.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
Everyone's forgotten by now but back when schools were trying to open up again it was very common for them to be closed again a week or two later because whoops looks like half the staff are out sick and we literally don't have enough people to run the place!
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
I think he's definitely in abysmal health and they obviously wanna cover that up but I also think the instant he actually croaks Vance is gonna run toward the nearest camera to announce it.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
The pitch for a post-Trump America has to be "we let these lunatics govern and it was a disaster so we're throwing it all out!" You can't run on "well actually let's keep the infinity money for cops and the deportations and the trans discrimination but just do it all smarter."
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
Dillary Clump or Honald Trinton?
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
Nothing to worry about. Obviously as nature's protagonists we can adapt to beat infectious diseases, but there's no way they'd ever turn around and do the same to us.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
"I'm 37 for goodness' sake!"
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
I would like to think that now might be the worst time to try to sell the Dem votership on a candidate nearly twice as old as the alternative. Like I'm really not worried at all that they'll actually go for it and Schumer's endorsement will likely hurt more than help.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
Prepro - principal photography - post used to be a sensible workflow and they wouldn't overlap too much cause you needed one to be done before you could really start on the next, but now it's all one big pile of harried workers scrambling to do it all at the same time.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
The main problem is they're trying to squeeze the production cycle to make it shorter but in the process doing everything very inefficiently. Filming before you've got a script and with minimal preproduction and dumping everything on the VFX team who are also working as filming is happening.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
Pretty soon every public health agency is gonna be wall-to-wall wackos publishing advice telling citizens "Lick doorknobs!" or "Rub manure into open wounds; it's nature's poultice!"
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
This is one reason why people aren't donating to the national party orgs (and shouldn't). This is how they spend that money.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
Probably should not be selling your restaurant's primary gimmick in a jar for people to use in their home cooking instead of buying your food.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
This is what they're used to doing with progressive candidates though, lying and making it seem like their approval *could* be won if the candidate would just address a few (completely BS) concerns. They're just not used to being so unpopular their endorsements barely count for squat.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
Jeffries and others withholding endorsements imagine themselves holding out a tempting carrot that they expect Mamdani to jump for so they get to yank it away. Trouble is he does not need their endorsements at all and isn't gonna jump so they just look like evil dopes.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
It's probably a good time to be reminding people why we have a 3rd Amendment.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
The main point of creating and maintaining an impossible standard of behavior for Dems is to signal to squishy conservatives that it's okay to "reluctantly" continue to vote for Republicans.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
Convince him before he croaks that he deserves to have his top advisors and cabinet interred with him out of respect.

Portraying it as a vice is at least a tiny bit better than acting like continuing to post there is a brave and important service being performed.

Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
Individual Dem campaigns that don't completely suck ass aren't have any trouble raising money. It's literally just that nobody wants to give their limited funds to the National Fuckup Committee.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
Remember how the DNC fight wasn't even about trying to win a policy concession but literally begging the Harris campaign to let a Palestinian-American speak to endorse her in exchange for nothing and they still refused?
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
Mamdani is running against not one but two quasi-Dems running as independents, who had earlier received endorsements in the primary. This is not your typical election and Dem leaders would be wise to endorse sooner than later and especially stop taking potshots at the campaign like Jeffries.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
It wouldn't be hard, but all the same it's work. And the first principle of Senate Dem politics is "when can we go home?"
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
I actually think some of these holdouts will endorse at the last possible moment and still expect full credit for it, including feeling entitled to a reciprocal endorsement next year.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
All the NY pols refusing to endorse are themselves extremely unpopular so they need the boost from offering the endorsement far more than Mamdani needs to be endorsed by them, which is basically not at all.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
The thing about appointing a wretched successor is that that's gonna overshadow a lot of your own legacy.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
Jeffries is prioritizing appeasing his donors over both his own constituents' desires and more importantly his role in Dem leadership. And that illustrates why he absolutely should not have a role in leadership now or ever again.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
Jeffries sucks at even pretending like his endorsement is gettable. Good thing it's not as important as he thinks it is.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
The problem with trotting out the "you gotta compromise all of your values and vote for someone you hate" arguments this early is that if people aren't already sick of it they sure as hell will be if you keep doing it for three more years.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm increasingly relieved when I see a TV in public running something banal like home renovation programming.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
Dems' genius plan for 2028: Step 1) Do almost nothing to oppose Trump's policies because you think they'll become unpopular on their own. Step 2) Don't draw any distinction between those unpopular policies and your own. In fact, consider adopting some of them. Very smart, serious stuff.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
The whole idea of the deep state mythos is that Republicans like to position themselves as enemies of government but that's tricky to pull off when they're in charge of everything so they make believe there's a secret Super Government that they can still oppose while being the actual government.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
Used to be guys like this who'd constantly fantasize about getting into a confrontation would at least imagine themselves fighting and winning instead of just being really good at running away.

I didn't say anything about AI and I would have had the same opinion about email 10 years ago. People gotta clear out those inboxes once in a while.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
I agree but I also think the average person probably should be forcibly sat down and made to clear out their email at least once a year for their own good.

In fairness of the two possible factors in this accident (guy was old/guy was speeding), the speeding is the only one we know for sure contributed to the crash.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
I can think of reasons why maybe this effort could fail (gay Republicans exist, some of them are married, and some of those are big money donors), but nothing's off the table anymore so I'd never say it couldn't happen.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
There's still the wildcard element of "caving and cutting a deal doesn't actually get you off the hook."
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
Part of this is just the agency problem where people across the political spectrum treat conservative voters as some immutable force that can only be appeased while the rest of us actual human beings are the ones expected to sacrifice what we want to make them happy.

I was trying to recall this story but couldn't remember the specifics. Thanks.

It bugs me seeing people get genuinely anguished arguing over the nonsensical hypothetical of him being the Dem candidate. People are letting themselves get extremely upset over a what-if scenario that is only slightly less unrealistic than "well what if the candidate was Bigfoot?"
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
It might be easier to feel sorry for centrist Dems ignoring all the warnings that this was where they were to going to end up if they hadn't also treated the people who were warning them with so much scorn and venom.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
This guy will never win a primary so we may as well move on to discussing how no future Dem admin should ever give this schmuck a pity job ever again.

I think they're actively trying to pitch this tech to just the weirdest and most awful guy they can imagine and while I can believe that guy definitely exists I don't believe there's enough of him for them to turn a profit.
Brian (@thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social) reply parent
On the one hand it seems ridiculous that anyone could think "I'll just edit an online copy of the Constitution and that'll fool 'em" but on the other hand if I ask "would our senile idiot President think that was a smart plan and would people be craven enough to do it for him?" well obviously, yes.

I joked a month ago about how touchy partisan Dems were getting if you talked about the absurd opposition to Mamdani as something that was a problem for the party as a whole simply because it was coming from prominent Dems including ones in leadership. bsky.app/profile/that...

Technically all they've done is erase the statement saying they'd do it. They didn't release a new statement saying they wouldn't. But hopefully it's because they rightly fear the wrath of a bunch of pissed-off disaster victims.

Even in the replies to that video you've got well-intentioned dopes reciting "even the worst person deserves a lawyer" but I feel like that person being mega guilty and their lawyer being a close friend who is possibly implicated in some of their misdeeds means it's okay to judge the lawyer.

Pledging that you'll support any candidate who makes it out of the primaries no matter how awful inherently lowers candidate quality. If trash candidates knew enough Dems would refuse vote for them that it was mathematically impossible for them to win fewer of them would run in the first place.
