A mural I painted, in oils on canvas, on the walls and ceiling of the entry way of a 3 story mansion I lived and painted in for 9 years starting 1973. when one stood at the second floor the ocean horizon was at eye level and the real columns merged with the painted ones.

This photo shows part of a large mural I painted in oils on canvas, which took months. It was something to behold as the light from the windows made the work glow. Alas, when the house was sold the next owner, who ran a big San Francisco restaurant, whitewashed over this and the other mural I did downstairs. :-(. I have had bad experiences with murals, the only one that (probably) survives was the huge oil painted Mars concept landscape that was the backdrop for the Viking 1 lander model at JPL at the time of the Viking missions. That one just might be in storage rolled up somewhere. Here is the left side of the mural, seen at its intended perspective so the horizon line is straight.

#PPOD: A gigantic jet was photographed from the International Space Station by astronaut Nichole Ayers on 3 July 2025. Gigantic jets are transient luminous events (TLEs) that appear to initiate as an intracloud flash between the middle negative and upper positive charge regions in a thundercloud. đŸ§Ș

Taken from the ISS, a gigantic jet spears up from a thunderstorm cloud near the Texas-Mexico border. The spear is blue-white at the cloud, with a massive light spreading out in all directions. Near the top of the jet, the lightning turns to red and branches out. In the foreground is the Canadarm2. The city lights of Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, and Houston are to the northeast, and TorreĂłn, Mexico, to the southwest.

How do you get the acceleration measurement from the car? They have accelerometers but it isn't easy for the owner to access. It would be easier to use the phone's accelerometer. I see safety problems with students using cars for a physics experiment.

If they are using an accelerometer you could challenge them to produce a constant acceleration for x seconds using only body motion.

Not sure I understand your constraints. How is it different from measuring the acceleration of an elevator etc. and using it to find velocity and position?

Too bad these are difficult to obtain. However, regular pull-back cars have an interesting acceleration profile. I attached a phone to one and measured the acceleration. A simple numerical integration yields the velocity and position curves. Data File: docs.google.com/spreadsheets... #ITeachPhysics

acceleration vs time graph showing a steep increase to about 0.7 m/s/s that is held for a short time, it decreases linearly to about -0.3 m/s/s and holds until finally going to zero just after 8 seconds velocity time increases from 0 to about 1.3 m/s then decreases linearly to about 0 m/s just after 8 seconds position time increases from 0 to about 5.8 m in about 8 s. it is concave up then changes to linear at about 3 s, then concave down from 4 to 8 s image of phone attached to top of toy pull back car using rubber bands. He gets a certificate of participation in the initial round. He will get more if he does well and goes on. You might get a certificate too! Hard for a senior to make the team for the 1st time. There are many online courses. I did a course on MIT's system. This looks good: ocw.mit.edu/courses/8-03...

Some #spaceart I've done over the years. Please repost for me. #SciArt

Illustration of Jupiter seen from the surface of Callisto, one of its four larger moons. The vertical structures are ice spires. Illustration of the asteroid Chariklo, which, oddly, is known to have a ring of dust around it. Illustration of Jupiter seen from the surface of Europa, one of its four larger moons. A water jet is seen erupting. Io, another large moon, is seen crossing the face of Jupiter. Illustration of the surface of the hell planet, Venus. No lightning has been detected there AFAIK, but that's what artistic licence is for.

Hard to turn down one with the others standing there. I only turned down students that cheated in my class. That would have been awkward. You would think they wouldn’t even ask, they did!

1st part of a 4-panel mosaic that will cover (hopefully) the entire Veil Nebula. Fleming's Triangular Wisp is at left and most of the Eastern Veil to right. The Veil is a great narrow band target because the O III and S II signals are almost as strong as H-alpha. Details in ALT #astrophotography

It is a nice image but you don't have to go to space, they bombarded my images of the Perseid meteors. This is a time lapse where each frame is 4s. They are glinting the reflected light from the day side of the Earth back at us. The favorable spot moves to the right.
