I work with epidemiologists, and I have my MS in epidemiology and biostatistics. I am aware. That doesn’t change that the pandemic portion of this disease is largely over. Language does matter. Public health measures to combat a pandemic are not the same as those to manage an endemic illness.

Prisoner Wine Co. has been a long-time favorite of mine, so I was thrilled when they came out with their Unshackled brut rosƩ. Fruit forward, apricot, peach, floral notes, good minerality. Pairs well with sunshine and fruity or creamy desserts.

Roederer Estate in Anderson Valley, CA has a kickass brut that is one of my favorite gift wines. Expensive enough to show you care but won’t break the bank. Pear, spice, hazelnut come from oak aging of some wines added to the blend. Pairs best with good friends and a celebration.

A green bottle of wine with black foil and gold accents. A black label with gold writing indicates that this is a brut from Roederer Estate.

Another ā€œCalifornia Champagne,ā€ I like to recommend this one to newbies. It’s a little sweeter on the finish with less minerality than classic dry sparkling wines, which I think makes it more approachable. Baked apple, orange zest, and honeysuckle. Pairs well with entrees like seafood and pasta.

A green bottle of wine with gold foil. A white label with a duck on it has the winery and other information.

Now we go to ā€œCalifornia Champagneā€ with Chandon Brut. Made using the methode champagnoise, you get champagne taste at domestic prices. Often <$25 as well. Green apple, pear, citrus, soft finish. Food friendly, honestly I like this one with fried chicken.

A green bottle of wine with gold foil. A gold strip runs vertically staring ā€œChandonā€ while a white label behind it describes the wine.

Next up is another budget buy. Mionetto’s Prosecco. I like this one in cocktails like a French 75 due to the larger bubbles produced by stainless steel fermentation. Golden and green apple, honey, melon, white peach with good acidity. Pairs well with light appetizers.

A black bottle of wine with orange foil. A thin orange label stretches diagonally bottom left to top right saying ā€œMionetto Proseccoā€.

We’ll start with this vintage brut rosado Cava by Naveran. This is a blend of organic Pinot Noir with Parallada grapes. Tiny bubbles, red fruit, vanilla, and a bit of spice. Often less than $25, which is a steal for a vintage Cava. Great for sipping but pairs well with charcuterie/soft cheeses.

A clear bottle with rose sparkling wine with a gold foil. The label has a woman in a flowered hat.

Paper drop, for anyone interested in #metascience, #statistics, or #metaanalysis! @clintin.bsky.social and I show in a new paper in JASA that the P-curve, a popular forensic meta-analysis method, has deeply undesirable statistical properties. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... 1/?

Cover page for the manuscript: Morey, R. D., & Davis-Stober, C. P. (2025). On the poor statistical properties of the P-curve meta-analytic procedure. Journal of the American Statistical Association, 1–19. https://doi.org/10.1080/01621459.2025.2544397 Abstract for the paper: The P-curve (Simonsohn, Nelson, & Simmons, 2014; Simonsohn, Simmons, & Nelson, 2015) is a widely-used suite of meta-analytic tests advertised for detecting problems in sets of studies. They are based on nonparametric combinations of p values (e.g., Marden, 1985) across significant (p < .05) studies and are variously claimed to detect ā€œevidential valueā€, ā€œlack of evidential valueā€, and ā€œleft skewā€ in p values. We show that these tests do not have the properties ascribed to them. Moreover, they fail basic desiderata for tests, including admissibility and monotonicity. In light of these serious problems, we recommend against the use of the P-curve tests.
