Yeah that seems about right, very proof of concept script repurposed for a big franchise. I'd watch it for Brad Dourif alone, he's sooooo good in every role, and Ron Perlman brings so much to the film with his presence alone.
Dimly lit closeups does not an Alien film make but I can't blame Joss for that. All the hard realism just thrown away for a wacky scifi romp. Like they tried to market Alien as a fun action film for the summer holidays and shit, maybe that was the case.
Say what you will about Joss Whedon but truly his greatest failure amongst a litany of failures was Alien 4. Tone, atmosphere, story, character, all completely different from previous and none of them in a good way. His dialogue is atrocious and straight from the mouth of an incel teen.

Totally agree, seeing them blown apart in waves by a few marines really cheapened them as an aspect of horror. The Aliens: Dark Descent game has the same concept but done way better, the marines never kill aliens en masse without tons of prep. LOVING Alien Earth so far.

Alien 3 is the second best Alien film, hands down. I'm not even joking. Incredible acting, an atmosphere as thick as night, a dark realism that mirrors that psycho-sexual agony of the alien itself. 2 is good, but it's telling a story, a series of events, it isn't communicating more than that.
